Good books for Buddha teachings?

I was wondering if anyone knew of some really good books on the teachings of buddha, specifically for beginners on the right path. The reason i ask is because i have a very good friend who is currently in prison, and i wanted to send him some books to keep his mind busy and to keep his heart intact. I was thinking of sending him some Ramana Maharshi, but i figured it would be too difficult for him to understand. I am quite familiar with buddha and i find his teachings very helpful and easy to grasp, but many of the teachings i have read are riddled and i think require at least some prior knowledge or experience in the matter. I have looked on amazon and found this one interesting:
http://www.amazon.com/Awakening-Buddha-Within-Tibetan-Western/dp/0767901576/ref=sr_1_4?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1298437997&sr=1-4
anyone ever read it?
He is very open to new ideas, and thats a good start.
btw feel free to recommend any other good books that you found entertaining. I appreciate the help.

I enjoy books on zen buddhism quite a bit. Anything by Suzuki Roshi or Philip Kapleau is an excellent read in my opinion.

The book is like the whole grail of badass spiritual quotes heres some examples:
"Knowing others is intelligence; knowing yourself is true wisdom. Mastering others is strength; mastering yourself is true power. If you realize that you have enough, you are truly rich."
“To know you have enough is to be rich.”
“When spring comes the grass grows by itself.”
“Do not conquer the world with force, for force only causes resistance. Thorns spring up when an army passes. Years of misery follow a great victory. Do only what needs to be done without using violence.”
“In dwelling, live close to the ground. In thinking, keep to the simple. In conflict, be fair and generous. In governing, don't try to control. In work, do what you enjoy. In family life, be completely present.”
“Whoever can see through all fear will always be safe.”
“Governing a large country is like frying a small fish. You spoil it with too much poking.”
I fucking love Taoism.

Send him some UG Krishnamurti
"The Buddha was the filthiest bastard that the world has ever seen or will ever see." ~ U.G Krishnamurti
"The body cares only about 2 things:
Survial and Fucking
For the continuity of the human species
Not for love
Not for pleasure
Not any other shit
you talk about
Poem: UG Krishnamurti"
"Whether you are interested in Moksha,Liberation, Freedom, Transformation, you name it, or you are interested in happiness without one moment of unhappiness, pleasure without pain, it is the same thing."
"All our experiences, spiritual or otherwise, are the basic cause of our suffering.... The body is not interested in anything that you are interested in. That is the battle that is going on all the time... There seems to be no way out...."
"My interest is not to knock off what others have said [that is too easy], but to knock off what I am saying. More precisely, I am trying to stop what you are making out of what I am saying."
"My mission, if there is any, should be, from now on, to debunk every statement I have made. If you take seriously and try to use or apply what I have said, you will be in danger."
"I am always emphasizing that somehow the truth has to dawn upon you that there is nothing to understand."
"You mistakenly believe that by pursuing the spiritual goal you will somehow miraculously make your material goals simple and manageable."
"Boredom is a bottomless pit. As long as you think that there is something more interesting, more purposeful, more meaningful to do than what you are actually doing, you have no way of freeing yourself from boredom."
-------------------- Little left in the way of energy; or the way of love, yet happy to entertain myself playing mental games with the rest of you freaks until the rivers run backwards. "Chat your fraff Chat your fraff Just chat your fraff Chat your fraff"

The Dhammapada is a great text on the teachings of the Buddha. Perhaps you could send a beginners meditation book, I am sure he has the time, and learning to meditate could take away some of the strain of being behind bars (it did for me)

The best resources are on the internet, some books are good but most are full of commentaries by the author not direct teachings of Gautama
This site is fantastic, id guess if you have an ipad or something its just as good as having a book

Great posts, thank you all.
@Grapefruit I have heard Krishnamurti before, but i never knew he could be so outspoken. From the videos i saw of him he always spoke straight from the heart. I will have to read more of his material.
thanks again all, awesome recommendations, keep em coming..
