that brings up something that im actually curious about
is there really restricted speech/expression in other places (such as canada or eastern/western europe, obviously iraq and other similar places have restrictions)? are news papers edited to reflect the view of the government?
can i get some examples? or some input by people who live in those places?

From Wiki:
Quote:
In February 2006, Calgary Muslim leader Syed Soharwardy filed a human rights complaint against Western Standard publisher Ezra Levant. Levant was compelled to appear before the Alberta Human Rights Commission to discuss his intention in publishing the cartoons. Levant posted a video of the hearing on YouTube. Levant questioned the competence of the Commission to take up the issue, and challenged it to convict him, "and sentences me to the apology", stating that he would then take "this junk into the real courts, where eight hundred years of common law" would come to his aid.[50]
In 2007, a complaint was filed with the Ontario Human Rights Commission related to an article "The Future Belongs to Islam,"[41] written by Mark Steyn, published in Maclean's magazine. The complainants alleged that the article and Maclean's refusal to provide space for a rebuttal violated their human rights. The complainants also claimed that the article was one of twenty-two (22) Maclean's articles, many written by Steyn, about Muslims.[42] Further complaints were filed with the Canadian Human Rights Commission and the British Columbia Human Rights Tribunal.[51] Steyn was eventually acquitted.
A Montreal neo-Nazi has been given a six-month prison sentence for wilfully promoting hatred toward blacks and Jews on his website. Calling Jean-Sebastien Presseault's opinions "vile" and "nauseating," Quebec Court Judge Martin Vauclair sent the heavily tattooed man back to jail. The 24 tattoos, including several Ku Klux Klan and Nazi symbols covering the defendant's torso, figure prominently in Vauclair's decision to give jail time, as opposed to a sentence to be served in the community, as the defence had hoped for. "The violence he inflicted on his own body to leave almost-indelible marks of his convictions testify as to his unresolved frustrations but also to his deep-seated racist and hateful beliefs," Vauclair said.
In the landmark Supreme Court of Canada case R. v. Zundel (1992), the court struck down a provision in the Criminal Code of Canada that prohibited publication of false information or news, stating that it violated section 2(b) of the Charter.
Under section 318 of the Criminal Code of Canada, it is illegal to promote genocide. Under section 319, it is illegal to publicly incite hatred against people based on their colour, race, religion, ethnic origin, and sexual orientation, except where the statements made are true or are made in good faith. The prohibition against inciting hatred based on sexual orientation was added to the section in 2004 with the passage of Bill C-250.

You're looking at me aren't you...
I don't really know actually, I live in eastern europe but the EU-part, so we pretty much can say whatever the fuck we want whenever the fuck we want it, organize protests and all that shit. It really depends on the people who are in charge, if it's a half-assed democracy, then people who have opinions that differ from the view of those that run the country are sacked and quickly lose their jobs, don't get published or even disappear. If you're living in a dictatorship then there is every chance that the state police or whatever form their control takes is going trough everything that is published and points out what they don't like, it used to be like that here in the past but fortunately we murdered those bastards and I'm to young to remember it.
Fuck, I just saw that you asked about Canada, seriously? Are you dicking around?

in the western world it's not always as restrictive as I made it out to be but the news in most nations is run past a government censor, CNN volunteered for censorship during the first gulf war and broadcast from atlanta as though they were in Riyadh... in the US there's no censors other than for inappropriate language and nudity in mainstream media

BTW did you know our first amendment rights are now protected in "free speech zones?" so I guess if you want to draw those pictures you have to go into an area with fifteen foot high barbwire fences n shit
you got no idea what you're talking about do you
I know they're for protesting and shit, I was exaggerating on purpose :P
the way it works is to have a protest you have to apply for a permit, they allow that permit for a specific day in a given location, you've seen some of these protests, both sides try and push their limits, the point behind it all is to stop demonstrators from disrupting what ever event is being protested, thus honoring the rights of both sides, the protesters get their free speech and the bilderbergers get to plot and scheme
