Spoon water onto verm pile to support large amount of pins?
    #14009395 - 02/22/11 07:28 PM (12 years, 11 months ago)

So I got some freestone Texas growing on BRF cakes. They have a ton of pin on them. Ive read that i could set them in a little bowl of water but alot of the cakes have pins growing on the very lower part of the side of the cakes. i assume that this is because of the water gathering on the foil. I was thinking that I could set a little pile of verm on the top and spoon maybe a tablespoon of water a day on it. would this be a wise decision?

If you have pins growing, let it be and fruit out. next time I'd do a double ended casing to give yourself a water reserve. but It would be unwise I think to mess with it right now. Just grow and enjoy :jah:

If there's standing water on the foil, you're misting too much and not providing enough FAE.  Don't pour a tablespoon of water on your cakes, you need to be using less water.  Too much water on your pins can cause them to abort.

don't get me wrong, there is not standing water on my foil but some has to run under the cake as I mist while the top of the cakes are exposed to the open air. If I pick up a cake, the bottom part is much more moist looking then the top.

If your cakes are pinning, I'd leave them alone until your next flush. If you keep messing with them, your grow can suffer. Give them the top layer of verm next flush.

Ok, I understand what you're saying.  Actually, what I have heard about this is that cakes pin most on the bottom because gravity pulls the water to the bottom of the cake.  I believe that was in a thread about PE but strain shouldn't make a difference with regard to this.

Yes, thats true as you can watch all of your cakes get fat on the bottom just like most humans do when they get older and stop moving as much! The pile of verm will help ya out, so will flipping the cake next flush as well
