Depression and Mushrooms

Hey guys,
I'm wondering how the Shroomery crew feel about depression and mushrooms. Have you ever been depressed / diagnosed as being depressed and still taken mushrooms? Did it help? Hinder?
I'm curious, because I generally believe in the psychedelic mushrooms as a useful tool to help me think about and face some certain things, that I am not usually able to face, due to ego problems (jealousy, insecurity... y'know, all the usuals.)
I was having some problems recently and spoke to my doctor, she thought I might be depressed anbd referred me to a psych. I never went. I'm too arrogant to go to a psych.
But, I've been relatively fine. I've been working full time for over 3 years quite capably. I don't take regular days off, or find it hard to find motivation to do the things in life I want to do. It's just that sometimes I feel there's TOO MUCH to do.
I find that mushrooms (in particular) help me to put things back in perspective, help me re-prioritise, put me more at ease with how i'm going in life. It doesn't exacerbate depression for me, but I feel I've learnt the ego-holes that I once became trapped in, and am able to easily out-logic it.
But, I get the feeling this is a rather subjective experience, and perhaps for some with depression, they would spiral around and around those ego-holes, and eventually self-loathe more.
So, does anyone have any experience with depression (either your own or someone close to you) and mushrooms? Bad experiences, good experiences, neutral experiences?
I ask, because my partner has been down lately, fairly depressed, and I really want to trip with her. But I don't want it to be an all-shit trip, even though I know no matter what, she's going to have things to face.....

I've had some mushrooms in my drawer I've wanted to use for months but I'm wondering the same thing about my mindset man..
It could go either way but I don't want to take the chance.
Also, you don't sound depressed you just sound stressed. I think mushrooms would be fine for you.

I know I wouldn't want to trip while I was depressed, or stressed.
When I wanna eat some mushrooms, the last thing I want hovering over my head is a big black cloud.

Hehe, you're certainly right about that. I think that if I had've gone to a psych, they would've told me that. My stress is often irrational too, just the "do, do, do" mentality this society seems to instill in us. Feel guilty when i'm not doing a bajillion things.
But yeah, totally know where you're at... there's that nervous feeling around taking mushrooms for me... It's exciting and scary all at once...

last time I tripped, I was in a pretty dark place, really depressed. I basically cried the whole time. It was bad and relieving at the same time. But it doesn't appear that you're in the same place I was, so I say go for it, you'll be good. I can't say the same thing for your friend, since I don't know her situation, but I know that other people can definitely bring down your trip.

If I am depressed I use a small amount of mushrooms for a mood lift and a larger amount a few days later to work out the problems with a positive perspective.

Take a low dose of 1.5 to 1.7 grams if your weak minded and still want to trip. That way it wont be too strong if you do't like it.
Depression is a self inflicted state of self pity, the only thing that can help you is yourself.

Big Worm - Although you cried the whole time, was it releasing? Did you feel a bit better about things after it? Get some positive perspective... or was it mostly just a neutral experience in hindsight?
I don't find that mushrooms necessarily elevate my mood, perse, even though I tend to laugh a lot... it's more about logic and how thought works... my thought goes into different patterns, my dominant ego subsides enough to be able to analyse it... it's all about analysing for me.
In the end, it'll be up to my partner if she wants to trip or not.. and I don't want to leave her out by tripping with out her. I don't want her to have a bad time... but perhaps, with large enough a dose.. she might break through some of the logic spirals she's found herself in... and although it might suck at the time, she might come out with new understandings... But... I don't know.. it's not something that can be safely predicted!

I find its hit or miss. I have had truly evil trips when I was depressed. Mostly when tripping alone. On the other hand I like evil trips. I find "bad trips" to be fantastic. The only time I have a negative experience is when my stomach hurts. I find that stress or anxiety can be worse than depression. Mushrooms lift my mood, however, tripping is a naturally anxious experience. The result can be a little intense. Think freaking out about how much homework I have and trying to do it while frying. Not good.
Be with fun people not annoying stupid people and get out of the house and you should be okay. Go camping...
I recently went on zoloft and I don;t really know what to expect if I mix it with mushrooms.

Depression is a chemical imbalance in the brain...
I would say it depends.... I have suffers from depression, and dont believes mushrooms help or hurt the depression... I think it might help sort out issues and put things in perspective...
If I was seriously down, I would not do mushrooms though...

I tend to lean towards the side of caution, but all in all I say go for it(just don't off yourself or anything while shrooming, not saying you will but just saying) the experience could give you a bit of insight into things, at the very least there is nothing quite like delving into the depths of human despair for an interesting experience.

I have been diagnosed as being a manic depressive, i had ocd(i like to think Ive kicked it), and the doc says i might have dabblings in schizophrenia due to it being in my family for generations as well as mild to extreme anxiety .
The docs want to put me on meds but i really don't take anything except for xanax, have to say that the few times i have done mushrooms it really helps me put things in order and makes me feel a lot better on the inside for weeks after.

If you think that the trip will do you harm, don't do it. But if you go into the trip with a good "attitude" the mushrooms might just lead you in the right direction. Usually after I dose, I have a hangover depression which is gone by the next day. Oh yeah and ssris are much safer than benzos, just thought I would bring that up.

yes. anxiety and stress are so much worse than depression when tripping. the most menial shit that you think about can be amplified ten fold in that mind state and if you dont have experience with that, well lets just say it can lead to a fun night

nope. pharmaceutical companies use that theory to sell their drugs.

That was an interesting read, bigmike7104. I never really thought about it. I'm surprised that the pharmaceutical companies would lie to us to get our money

Jesus, THANK YOU for finally giving me evidence about that.
I'm sure most people who are 'depressed' need more exercise, I healthy, non-standard american diet, and new hobbies and friends. The realy depressing thing? That it IS that simple.
