Losing weight and alcohol.. Need some help!
#14006963 - 02/22/11 11:49 AM (12 years, 11 months ago) |

I'm having a competition with a friend to see who can lose the most weight in a month. My only problem? I drink about a case of 12 beers a day. Or at least a 6-pack a night.
I've been doing this for quite awhile now. Do you think there are any real dangers in just stopping it cold turkey? And if there are, any way to get around it so I can continue working out (i.e. is Jack Daniels less fattening than all those beers)?
Either way, I plan on starting jogging either tomorrow night or the night after.
Any weight-loss tips? Wish me luck!

That depends on how long you have been drinking like that. I heard a good quote a while back. "If you put a hardcore junky and a hardcore alcoholic in a closet for a week, you come back with an angry junky and a dead drunk." Depending on your level of addiction, alcohol with drawl can cause hallucinations, tremors, and in some cases be fatal. Switch to a light beer or cut yourself down to 2 or 3 beers in a night.
And good luck on your weight loss!! Cutting down alcohol and losing weight will make you feel like a new man.

Good luck losing weight if you're drinking 1400+ calories from beer alone
Drinking 6 is still averaging like 700+ calories
How long have you been doing this? Thats really heavy drinking to be doing every day

to lose weight, use hydroxycut, clenbuteral (legal in mexico and in veterinary cough syrup) or ephedrine, caffeine, aspirine stack - hit the gym or start jogging first thing in the morning - then, 1 hour pause before eating. Also train at night and don't eat anything (maybe a can of tuna in water) until 1 hour after training in the morning again. Eliminate alcohol, white flour, sugar and fat from your diet. minimize salt intake (no soda). Also, fasting for a couple days before weigh-in will allow you to drop a few pounds of "waste". I was a competitive bodybuilder in the 90's, and I could go on for pages but this will help. I didn't think it was possible, but I quit drinking about 15 months ago (with the help of "ego death") and it didn't kill me. Luck is simply the residue of design - GOOD LUCK!!

LOL did you just say eliminate fat from your diet?
No. Just no. You don't lose weight because you take fat out of your diet. Weight is all about calories. You need to eat fat.

Thanks for the input, guys! I really wanna stop drinking and lose a lot of weight. I've been drinking mostly 6-packs and 12-packs of Coors Light. Is that not too bad?

Well, my plan was to go from drinking 6-packs and 12-packs a night, to absolutely none at all. You know, quit cold turkey. I just don't know if that's enough to cause withdrawal symptoms that could be devastating..

Eh, maybe 2-4 months. I was drinking liquor before that, too, but not as often as every night. Sometime in December/January I decided to stop drinking, so I stopped for about a week. Damn weekends, though! I succumbed and had some more to drink.
Thoughts?

Uhh... well, if it was closer to 4 months, I would definitely not go cold turkey... try drinking 1-3 beers max and you'll be fine.. do that for like a week or so and then cut off, maybe a bit longer if you need to

Ah okay, so a week of recession? I don't doubt that I can catch up and win. Would any benzos help me in withdrawal?

Op first off despite what other people have said. All those calories are almost considered "false" calories. Your body metabolzies beer incredibly quick unlike food.
" beer belly" is false. You don't get a beer belly from drinking beer. In fact alcohol has been proven to make you lose weight. When you drink, your not hungry, specially the next day if your even somewhat hung over.
Ive been drinking about 6 days of the week for the last 1.5 years. I usually consume on average 96 oz to 240 (2 nights ago) oz of beer. If i get a hold of hard liquor it is a 750ml bottle no matter what, then prob some beers in 1 night.
If your trying to come off. Specially if sometimes your only drinking a 6 pack. It should be quite easy. Just dont drink anything. In your case, stopping cold turkey is ok. If you were to drink say.. all day long for at least 4 days straight, then you cant just stop cold turkey.

The worst that will happen is you might get the sweats. Thats it. You havent been drinking enough to kill you.

everyone's different, but in my opinion and personal experience, that's not even close to a high enough amount of alcohol to pose any concerns with going cold turkey

Wrong and wrong...alcohol has been proven time and time again to cause you to 1. lower body metabolism (its an overall system depressant - mainly effecting your system nervous system, 2. alcohol is broken down into acetone which leads to increase fat storage. 3. Alcohol is the only drug that damages every single muscle tissue (and because more muscle = more calories burned, well, you do the math) 4. I don't know about you but I get way hungrier drunk than I ever get stoned. Not to mention the calories of the alcohol itself. All of this combined is just unnecessary... really, if you drink its whatever but don't go around saying you'll lose weight LOL

That is a LOT of booze... and you're trying to tell me you lose weight on that? Theres no way you could even exercise to your fullest if you drank like that on the daily... don't even get me started on how much that fucks up your liver. Your testosterone must be that of a pre-pube boy LOL

Your right that is way too much, but i drink that. I just did a 405 deadlift which was a PR by 30 lbs for the first time 2 days ago ( the day after i drank 240 oz of beer)
You get hungry to a certain amount of drinking. If you drink alot, the next day you are hung over and dehydrated. When this happens, your not hungry.

Read both and I still stand firm that alcohol most definitely can cause you to gain weight. That study didn't specify who exercised, who ate well, who didn't, the age of the individual, etc.
a 25 year old male who eats right and exercises probably won't see much of an impact from light to moderate use of booze, boozing heavy will hit testosterone hard/hydration/endurance/etc... but I guess exercising can offset it some, still terrible for the body.
a 50 year old male who doesn't eat right, doesn't exercise, and drinks heavily, is going to gain a lot of weight.
Really, I don't even need a study. I've been drinking long enough to realize that sober I am stronger, faster, more hydrated/endurance and that overall it leads me to being a far more lean person. If I drink I will see a huge dip in performance and I'll need an extra day or two to recover from a workout.. all of this leads to less calories burned

Haha.
The correlation between beer bellies and people who frequent the pub and drink a lot on a regular basis is staggering from what I've seen and known.
Also,"When you drink, your not hungry"
Tell that to the people who mob fast food joints when bars and clubs close at night. This one place called hillbillys has a queue down the road after any good night, everyone gets a breast in a bun or two and there's always a river of boxes outside from those breasts in buns.

haha is right. Beer is not responsible for the beer belly, it is the food that they eat while drinking. Pub's food have an incredibly high calorie count. And again im talking about being hungry the next day. What do you think is more of a hinder? eating one big meal that night, or eating barely anything the next day? do the math.

Ok still stand at that. Thats fine. Thinking from a medical stand of view it would make sense that drinking correlates with weight gain. There are have been tests that show weight loss though, and none that show weight gain.

I don't know what you're getting at.
If the extra weight was from food, you'd get bigger all round, not just a pregnant belly.
Let's just look at this.

Guy #2 has a full blown beer belly and #4 is on the way.
Sure, food might be some of this but drink is the main thing. Notice the waist hasn't increased in either and usually doesn't in beer belly cases. Jean size stays the same, yet a belly might hang over the front.
If you were to get fat from food, your jean size would be going up and you'd be more rotund all round, not just the belly.
