I know (or have read) that anything over 71% ABV is pointless when it comes to sterilization, but I've also read here that 95-99%~ ABV is actually counterproductive. Is this true?
I only ask because I have nearly a gallon of 190-proof (95% ABV) Everclear here at the house, which I might as well use for my alcohol lamp and sterilizing instead of buying "denatured" alcohol. I mean it burns clean and I have tons, so for all intensive purposes will it be fine?
On a side note Walgreens is having a buy one get one free sale on Isopropyl alcohol (70% & 91%), $2.00 a pop. At least here anyway.

if you are applying directly, that's sanitizing not sterilizing. When I working under the flowhood, I prefer 91% since it will evaporate within 15 seconds so i never have to worry about wet gloves. However, you have to really make sure you wipe things down properly since it does evaporate faster than 70%.
if you are talking about alcohol lamps, you need to use very pure ethanol (with or without MeOH). It burns at a hotter temperature

Eh, I got my words mixed up. Then yes, I'll be using it to sterilize (alcohol lamp) and sanitize.
Anyway, Everclear is pure ethanol... well, besides the water.

70% is best for sanitizing surgical gloves and tools, tabletops, etc., and wet gloves are fine to work with other than glass becomes slippery. Contaminants that may come in contact with your gloves are less likely to be blown off by the flowhood currents if your gloves are wet. RR

Thanks RR, I suppose I'll go buy some 70% Isopropyl for sanitizing and leave the Everclear for burning (and Jello shots! ).
