Really? So if people that live from pay check to paycheck and can barely support themselves and they go over by a few bucks, these people should be castrated with the "stupid tax" and the banks pocket the money? Get off your high horse, not everybody is fortunate to have a stable lifestyle, and because they needed a gallon of milk or whatever to survive they should be branded as "stupid" and be charged an additional fee for purchasing something as small as a gallon of milk.
Not only that, but have you ever heard of an atm skimmer?? It's not always the fault of the account holder.
You sir make me sick..

So if banks weren't around, what would you do for the gallon of milk?
You would go without and starve.
Sounds to me like you should be thanking the bank for saving your ass in a time of need. You get charged for this service like any other. Don't like it, do what you said in the OP, get rid of your bank.
If you're overdrafting, you have no money, and no need for a bank in the first place.

Dramatizing the problem by going on about "people who live from paycheck the paycheck" and who's fortunate is a vulgar appeal to emotion.

I don't think the grocery store accepts bullion, W_S.
I also don't understand how accepting the sovereign debt of your country is somehow more risky than something as volatile as precious metals, by the way.
If I was going to invest in something to do if the gov't defaults on its securities, it'd be a crate of ak47s buried in a crate full of grease under my garden, not silver

I've had a few bad experiences with banks, overdrafts and whatnot, but they were my fault. I thought the banks were helpful, a few times they waived the fees for being a longtime customer.
I had a good laugh at RP's comment complaining about monthly fees that are soon going to be associated with basic checking accounts. You do realize that the banks are providing a service don't you? And if they can't rape you with the hidden overdraft fees of yesterday, then they will have to charge for the service up front ie monthly fees.
I don't love banks, but they serve a purpose. If you don't require their services then stow your money elsewhere.

My bank just charges an overdraft fee if I'm overdrawn over $5. They used to do it if you were even a penny overdrawn.

allowing others to access your accounts does that as well, auto bill pay makes things convienient for that small fee but it also prevents you from reviewing and disputing bills, for instance my mother had an account with DirecTV, she'd set up for automatic deductions from her account, one day we had a DVR go bad and requested another be sent, it was never shipped, bill was still being deducted and then suddenly there was an extra $800 charge for the broken DVR because we hadnt returned it in the box the replacement which hadnt been shipped was supposed to arrive in, that caused 5 overdrafts on her account. of course DirecTV claims no responsibility and she was unaware that they were able to charge her account at will for anything other than the bills

Or, taking all your cash out but still instinctively pay with a card. Oops I have done that a few times.
I opted out of the overdraft protection and thankfully so, I tried the old forget about cash, use card thing just last week.

Banks... Dunno bout american bank system.. everything is private down there (I think), cant even imagine that, but whatever.
Our banks are as fucker up as yours...sure they survived the recession better, but still, cant get loans, expensive fees, overdraft is the same fucking thing than yours...
My problem...I got a outstanding balance on my line of credit...cant pay it in full with my legit money, cant deposit the other cash...therefore im paying interest on a loan that will always be the same fuckin amount cause my in = my outs.. (20$ over/under) each month...
Funny story, I was in a bank this morning, tried to get cash, didnt accept cause they looked at my visa bills and said I spent too much.
Fuck em... illegal cash it is forever!
