Got my first guitar!
    #14003509 - 02/21/11 07:40 PM (12 years, 11 months ago)

So I've finally gotten around to getting my first guitar and I'm loving it already. Anyone know of some good websites for acoustic lessons/songs for the beginner?

well, i can only play two songs and know a grand total of 5 chords.

And I learned them by looking up the tabs to song I like, then googling how to play the chords involved.

two monthes later I can Play Aeroplane over the Sea and You Ain't Going Nowhere. Turrdurr

Thats great man. Keep practicing. I promise you that down the road when you can really belt out some chords or riffs; it will feel great. Its a great method of output.

Get on it Belac! Some of the most important things you need to learn are right there.

Sweet guitar for 90 bucks!

I have an epiphone electric, that looks a lot like this:

They are pretty decent value priced guitars great for beginners. I've been playing guitar for years. Personally I'm going to say stay away from tabs if you can, they aren't a good way to learn how to play guitar I don't think. Maybe just to start, when you really need to, because it is impossible to find the right note or chord. Learn your chords and work on your ears, use that chord chart, there is a lot to learn. Think in terms of the root key and the harmonics of that note which form each chord. It would be good to learn some basic music theory but I know that is the last thing on your mind when you get your first guitar. What I did then, was play a cd of whatever song I want to learn how to play, find the chords, riffs, etc, often pausing the cd every couple seconds, if that is what it took, to figure out how to play a riff. Keep in mind there are multiple 'places' you can play any given riff on a guitar... I feel like doing this really developed my ears and I can hear musically really well, which is great if you want to be able to play to anything. Tabs are great if you want to limit yourself to somebody else's level. 75% of the tabs I have looked up on the internet were totally wrong, and I would then have to re-learn the correct way to play it, on my own! So I stopped trying to use tabs, but I admit that in the beginning it is hard not to sometimes.

Here's my free lesson for you:
First thing you should know is that the strings, from highest to lowest in pitch, are
E
B
G
D
A
E
This last E being the big fat string on top. At the 12th fret, the double dot marked fret probably right about where the neck meets the body, at that fret on each string is the same note, except one octave higher. Each fret represents a half-step increase from the first note (the open string). There are twelve notes in the chromatic scale. It all makes perfect sense! The fretboard repeats itself beyond the 12th fret, so everything is the same up there as at the first fret.

Good luck!

I had an easier time learning on my own than I did trying to figure out what the fuck all those teachers were trying to tell me haha

As for those epic chord charts and scale diagrams... waste of time in my opinion... take that time instead to learn the notes on the fretboard and how to construct scales/chords on your own - its far more rewarding than memorizing a bunch of chords which you have no knowledge behind besides how to play it. It will give you the knowledge to make music on any instrument. Make you a musician instead of just a guitar player

I would recommend you go to Ultimateguitar.com and just get tabs of your favourite songs. Learn to play those with a chord chard or something, and get good with chords and changing between them

my first lesson for you is to go here
http://web.mac.com/len15/LOVE528/528_Tuner.html
and tune your guitar to 528 hz.
play like normal and learn to "feel" your music, not just listen to it. music is simply a vibration.

Learn to play Open position chords C, A, G, E, D.

Learn to play barre chords and chords F and B

Learn to play minor chors, Cm, Am, Gm, Em, Dm

that will be a good start. learn to change between chords very fast, like G and D, C and Am, C and F.

Right now I'm trying to copy some Jack White stuff.. the way this dude turns power chords into songs is amazing. I'm having trouble between jumping between a chord at the 5th fret and a 15 notes in 2 second solo at the 15th fret

Kinda looks like mah baby. Vintage Guild Dreadnaught circa 1976
:soundsgoodman:
Sounds like your own quite the right track, learn yourself some white stripes songs. Usually they have a decently simple score and they sound most excellent
It's always nice to have some pretty finger picked songs to bust out.
And for me a little bit of jazz guitar is a standard  I love playing along to some classic funk songs though. I had fun with this one this morning...

Hmm never played on that exact amp but the last two amps I've bought have been voxs and I'm very happy with them :awesome:

The current one I'm playing through is a hybrid solid/tube, the pre-amps are tubes but the power amps are solid state.. but they sound quite sexy....

Fender blues jr, baby

Only buy all tube

I would never buy a solid state amp, nor would I buy one of those half tube amps either. Just get the real thing. You're going to end up getting it anyway. I played through the shitty fender transistor for years and I never realized just how shitty it sounded. Until I got this blues jr a few years ago and I will never go back. I played through a hybrid amp of a friends' and I thought it sounded like shit. Given, it was a peavey. But still. If you want the real thing, that all those other amps are just trying so hard to emulate, just go get that little $130 epiphone tube combo. Its perfect. 5 watts is loud in tube watts. It would blow a 50w transistor combo away in tone and probably volume too, for most practice and probably even gigging purposes. I'd take that over a hybrid tube amp any way.

My dream amp is a vox ac30 or maybe an ac15 would do. With greenbacks! And a gibson es-335 of course, with a sunburst finish.

Im sure those vox hybrid tube amps sound decent, because its vox. But to twighead...You say you can't gig with 50 watts??? Thats insane to me. Unless its just really not that loud (which would support my point about real tube amps). Because I had a 60 watt all tube amp that was honestly too loud to gig with. I was constantly being asked to turn down. I had to keep the master volume at under 2 always. I turned it up to five once and it was SCARY loud, like painful. What do you do with something that loud? Well if it were the 60s and nobody mic'd anything, and you wanted to be loud as fuck, it would be perfect. But if you asked some of those guys now, they'd probably say they wished they played at lower volumes and retained more of their hearing sensitivity. I don't know why guys buy stacks unless they really are playing stadiums because you just can't get good sound out of a big powerful amp at low volumes. What you want is a low-power tube amp, so you can push it hard, and get great sound without going deaf. 15 watt tube amps are PLENTY loud enough to play at bars or clubs or wherever especially since almost all venues provide the opportunity to be mic'd and ran through the PA. Theoretically you could play a stadium with a blues jr, you just need a great sound guy. Its better that way - great sound at reasonable volumes. So you can control it. And still loud as fuck!

Oh don't get me wrong the 50w hybrid can get loud as hell - not as loud as a pure 50w tube but louder than a 75w SS... the only problem is that our band played death metal so the drummer even unmic'd was extremely loud + we were opening and the venues didn't care enough to mic up our amps  Also I did not have noise reduction gear so pushing the amp to its limit caused quite a feedback problem.

But with volume - it can be a little deceiving... say 1 on the dial = 80 or so db, to reach 10db higher you turn your amp to 2, 10db higher than that is 4, 10db higher than that is 8... and so on, so that first half makes by far the most difference in volume - once you hit 5 you were probably near your amps maximum volume

Twighead,

I had a dream about your guitar.

I was looking at this thread a couple of days ago, and I saw the pic of your guitar and how you said it's fun to look at when you're tripping, and I saw it briefly, quietly agreed that it indeed would be interesting to look at while you were tripping, and moved on and thought nothing more about it.

Well, last night, I had a dream, and in it, I was on a beat up old bus with some other musicians, I have no idea where we were going, we had some driver driving and all of us were partying out in the middle of nowhere at night, just cruising down some lonesome highway.

I was tripping really hard in the dream... one of those mind blowing trips where you're walking a fine line between a glorious overload of magic euphoria and a hellish nightmare, and one slight change of mood could determine heaven or hell.

One of the other guys (I have no idea who these people are) handed me a guitar in such slow motion that the trails were almost mirrored images of the real thing.
It's amazing to me how the subconscious mind works, because if someone would have asked me to describe your guitar yesterday before I had the dream, I wouldn't of been able to do it, but in the dream, it looked exactly like the one in the picture you posted, even down to the distinct blue patterns on the fretboard.

I started playing Led Zeppelin's 'Dazed and Confused' on the guitar, which wasn't plugged in, but still amplified, I heard the rest of the instrumentals come in like you would normally hear in the song, but no one else was playing.
The guitar sounded of pure resplendence as it gleamed brilliantly in majestic hyper-color.
As the song progressed, the bus faded away and everything just became images and sounds of indescribable magnificence.

It'd be nice to have trips like that when I was conscious, haha.

But anyhow, I thought you might be interested to know that your guitar was a feature in some stranger's awesome ass dream.

Cheers

I think they run anywhere from 800-1100 new, but I'm not sure if they even make the exact line anymore...

I found mine on ebay for 400 and it was pretty much mint, I've seen a couple around for 400-500 on craigslist recently as well.

That's cool, the last guitar I was thinking about buying was $6,000, decided not to go so high-end and wind up in credit card debt... so $600-$1100 would be much better.

I am in the market for a new Electric guitar, and a new acoustic guitar with built in pick ups.

I write music, some requires straight up electric guitar like when I write 70's style hard-rock and a lot of the music I write is more like a 50's rockabilly meets folk kind of 60's pre-punk which prefers a more vintage acoustic sound.

You can make an acoustic guitar sound awesome with a vox amp, gain mid with distortion, like a velvet underground kind of sound.

anyhow, I'll make sure I tell the salesman at the guitar center why I'm interested in checking that one out, haha.

I'd go for it.

You don't like the Vox?  I love my Vox amp, loaded with presets.  There are much better amps out there, but I like the unique sound of the vox.
Mine is a Vox Valvetronix VT30 I got it for like $150.

Hooooly shit, what guitar costs 6k?

It's extremely versatile though, the pickups are duncan JB(bridge)/59(neck), 5 way selectable + mahogany body, ebony fretboard, grover tuners, and its a 1 piece guitar... I honestly can't think of anything else I'd need in a guit stick, anything from death metal to classical guitar sounds good through that guitar and the vox

I just noticed you had a VT-30... I play through a VT-50 so I know you'll be happy with the sound :awesome:

Probably good you didn't get it... you probably end up paying 4000$ extra just cause its a 'signature' model - there is no practical reason I can think of why any guitar should be more than 2k maybe 3k.

youtube is a really great resource. there are a bunch of competing guitar instructional sites that post techniques. it's good to be able to watch fingers move around a fret board. you should go out to shows and jam with people to try to pick up new skillz.

these are mine;

the strat is a yamaha rgx 1203s. i got it for almost free from my roommate and put in a new bridge. total ~$50 for a high end super strat thats older than i am and apparently incredilby rare. the coolest thing about it is the humbucking to single coil switch which i've never seen before. other than that it's a neck thru, 2 octave, ebony fretboard, jumbo fret shredding machine.

the acoustic i stole from the bio grad lounge at school. had 3 rotten strings and a cracked neck. so i took it home, epoxied it, loved it, and now its my humble lil acoustic.

I would never pay more than 1,500$ for a good guitar but... A new gibson was about 250$ or so around 1967... which equates to.. I don't know, a shit ton now?

A guitar is an EXTREMELY fine tuned work of art, I feel like I half stole mine only paying 400$ for it.

more than twice as much for an instrument that, from what i understand (not much), doesn't come close to the quality of the original. you're buying a name and an image more so than you are fine craftsmanship. not that there is anything wrong with that, and not that they probably aren't wonderful guitars. personally, i've never even touched one and am a guitar noob anyway.

Yeah I'd stay away from the sig models. An extra 3k just for someones name on your instrument. Funny thing is most guitarists don't play their own sig models, and you could build a better version of the same thing for about half the price. Not to mention most of them are tacky or ugly as shit

Here's mine, nothing special but it sounds alright.

I need a new amp but I can't decide on the best small (under 5 watt) tube amp. Anyone here know enough about these to point me in the right direction?

I don't even know what the equivalent would be anymore, gibson has LP's anywhere from 900$ up to 8000+$ most are around the same 1800$ or so price still.
I'm not sure of the difference in quality either but you're right about paying more for the name - which is why I will probably never buy a Gibson... Most overpriced guitars on the market in my opinion.

Schecters, Jacksons, and Music Mans for me.

Materials, attention to detail. Everything about a 3000 dollar guitar is better than a 300 dollar guitar. Lets not even discuss a particle board 25 dollar flea market guitar, obviously that is going to sound like shit.

Quality guitars are made from quality woods with very close attention to detail in the fit and finish. They play better, sound better, feel better, look better, etc.

Think about it. Guitars are precision instruments. The frets, bridge, nut, the neck joint angle, the flatness of the fretboard, every little detail is very important and what you pay for is quality control. A guitar coming out of a factory in china is not going to be perfect like a hand crafted instruments. The electronics will be cheap, the volume and tone pots will wear out much sooner, the pickups will be made in china and probably sound like garbage, often they aren't even made of solid wood but plywood or particle board (the gibson es-335 is an exception - the top and back are actually made of plywood even in the $3000+ models, but the center is solid wood)

It takes a lot of work to hand craft an electric guitar. A lot less work to crank a hundred out of a factory. But you can bet the hand built one will be the better guitar.

I will agree to a point about the quality of guitars, but it comes down to the player in all honest respects.

People who suck shit at playing will always use that excuse, "oh well it's cause it isnt my les gibson peevee paul mystic 3000 XRL fruitloop with a mahogony interior... that's why I cant play this lick very well on your guitar."

When people ask me what kind of guitar I have(meaning brand, not acoustic or electric), it's an immediate sign they dont know shit about music(or enough to warrent me talking with them), and are only into brand names. These are the same idiots mind you who have to have the iPhone4 2 months after they got their iPhone3.

Beethoven could write a symphony on 12 tin cans. If you need some special kind of guitar just to play, you are not a musician. You're a monkey who had memorized a sequence.

I'd ask you what kind of guitar you'd have

You'd probably be wrong to make the assumption that I don't know shit though.

Then I'd really wonder why the fuck you would want to talk about names painted on wood and not Diatonic Substitutions and Harmonic intervals or something that actually matters

OH yeah, totally.

I said all of that about expensive guitars and I don't even own one, not really. I grew up on <$400 guitars. I of course have had my hands on some really nice ones and you can really tell the difference.

There is such thing as a guitar that is unplayable. Setup is important even on a piece of shit.

As for the 'what kind of guitar do you have' thing
Well I dont know sometimes I ask that because I want to get an idea of the person's style, what they like to play, that is all really. And of course if somebody has a really sweet guitar then I get the idea that they take it really seriously. Its not a bad thing to have a cheapo guitar though. Mine is.

Yeah I agree on that.

I've been playing a 100$ acoustic for years, and still prefer it over my friend's more expensive ones. It even just sounds better and I cant explain why

And yeah I agree - I usually ask people to get a feel for their style.

Hardware is not unimportant

Especially if you mainly play genres that rely on heavy distortion - shitty guitars sound like fucking SHIT through a good amp with blazing distortion.

i think your being mean

maybe people are just curious what kid of guitar you have,

like in skateborading one might ask what deck you have

or in construction one might ask what drill you have

its called conversation

and i always like the feel of MY guitars jus cause im used to them, cheap or expensive, other peoples guitars feel alien to me

OK ok, I came off as rude.

If it comes up I dont mind talking about it, but if it's what we're going to talk about instead of actual music, that's a little stupid.

Has anyone played with MIDI guitars? They can be very fun, but no where near as senitive and responsive as a real one.

Still tho, the fact you can get a decent MIDI controller for under 200 is pretty sick

But they sell midi guitars under 200 now? I've been desiring one for quite some time... though working with midi in real time always slightly frustrates me with the damn 30-40ms delays  :aweman:

Yes they do, and I've heard multiple peopole tell me mine is better than their 2000$ one. different system or sending the signal or something, but it reduces the latency. Also the guitar controller is good because of the voicing... you cant really replicate the guitar voicings on a keyboard.

Look for the YouRock Guitar. It looks like a toy, because it practically is one, but is still one of the best MIDI controllers on the market. I use it exclusively for MIDI, but it has other capabilities

 it does look like a toy.. but its exactly what I'd need.

What kind of material are the strings made of?

I've always wanted to mod an old guitar hero guitar into a little controller just for shits and giggles.

There are steel wires where you strum and pluck, but the fretboard itself is like a membrain with raised strings and frets. That way you can take the entire neck off for transportation purposes

Never tried a midi guitar. But I have played a roland guitar synth (just a pickup mounted next to the bridge on a stratocaster, and a roland hardware device with all the sounds) and it is pretty cool
Not exactly new technology though

Yeah my uncle has had a strat with a midi pickup since the late 80's - but midi technology has improved pretty drastically in recent years, at least as far as sound quality is concerned.

Definitely

It would be sweet to control all of my softsynth sounds and stuff with a midi guitar interface, hook it right up to the laptop
Thats what I want to do

The first thing I'd probably do is make my 6 string guitar sound like a bass.... then I'd make it do dubstep esque wobble bass

Then harpsichord... Sitar.... aaaaahhhhhhhh I gotta get me one of those :awecid:

have you guys seen this crazy thing? the pickups actually energize the strings to create infinite sustain as well as other crazy shit.

That's sick... You could probably also split the midi mapping so that say your top string plays a bass drum, your A string a snare, and the rest of the strings bongos...

so many possibilities :awesome:
