I got a reishi culture and hit up some rye grain jars that i prepared the same way as in RRs videos
I hit em up with my reishi culture and it looked kinda like cobweb
but it didnt turn grey it stayed pretty white
so the jars are almost at 100% but i dont know if its reishi or cobweb that im growing

Reishi is not cottony IMO. Cobweb is, but it growth rate and excessive cottoniness is a dead giveaway that it's cobweb. If you've got a dull white jar that fills every bit of possible air space with "cottoniness" then it's probably cobweb. Pictures would help.

Reishi is the opposite of cottony. It grows kind of like a sheet of white latex across the grain. Pics would help but the reishi I've seen does not tend to go aerial. Was it a myc syringe?

Reishi mycelium isn't cottony. Another way to tell if the mycelium you describe is cobweb is by how noticeably rapidly the culture colonized the grains. Cobweb colonizes much faster than Reishi mycelium.

reishi cna be cottony if it is very old/senesced, but it will still be white.

Reishi mycelium looks pretty cottony to me. Velvet might describe it better. RR

Looking back at my Reishi grows, I can see what you all are saying by Reishi mycelium looking cottony if by cottony you mean like cotton balls, but like thick, healthy looking cotton balls. Generally when I hear "cottony", cobweb mold is presumed. That's why I asked if the culture was a super fast colonizer. Also, OP stated the source of culture was a myc syringe. Unless said syringe is not from a known and trusted vendor, had no reason to believe senesce was the case.
That's an interesting point, solumvita, about visual signs of biologically aged Reishi mycelium. Never grown Reishi from a grocery store culture nor have I expanded a culture so far that it senesced.

The first few posts had me freaking out for a bit. I have some Reishi in RR recipe rye jars too, they're showing a couple small spots of light growth, very reminiscent of cobweb. My wine cap is colonizing the same recipe great, though! I just hope these Reishi's make it. My first try with Reishi was with a culture syringe that was over half a year old That didn't work out so hot. The jars were sterile though!
