Just for clarification, because I hear these terms misused all the time (so I guess they've taken on new colloquial definitions), they are in reference to the cold war.

1st world: allies with US in the cold war
2nd world: allies with the Soviet Union in the cold war
3rd world: allies with neither

It has nothing to do with current country's socioeconomic standing.

Oh yeah.

I just mean that a nation being poor doesn't automaticaly make it 3rd world, even if it's currently destitute

Those historic definitions have evolved though.  Its not really fair to appeal to a historical definition with respect to a modern topic.

Just like gay no longer means happy, atom no longer means indivisible and atheist no longer means 'not a theist'.
