    #14001394 - 02/21/11 01:23 PM (13 years, 12 days ago)

so ive finally had enough of cake making, now i want to do a monotub. for obvious reasons. here is a list of what i have to get started. if i could get some instructional guide. Tell me what you would do with the supplies. and i plan on making an agar substitute for agar wedges, they ARE the better way to go in this situation, correct? no?

12, 1qt jars
WBS & rye
enough coco coir
enough vermiculite
calcium carbonate
gypsum
64 qt tub
92 qt tub
polyfil
drill and 2 1/8" hole saw
giant black trashbags
spore sprints and syringes (but in process of making agar substitute)

help me out im anxious!

Do you have access to hpoo? If so, I would use that. If the hpoo is leached of ammonia & acids I dont believe you need the gypsum or carbonate, as they are used to control the PH of the sub. Hpoo will grow you some sweet mushies.

With 12 1qt. containers you will have a lot more spawn than you would need to 2 tubs. I have 3 64qt. tubs off less spawn than that and they are going very well and quickly.

Make sure you have some tape laying around to tape up the plastic bags.

but then you still have to go through the process of finding the poo, pasteurizing the poo, then using...

all i do with coir is throw my dry team in, then 1 gallon of boiling water into a 5 gallon bucket.. cover, and let sit.. 2 hours later, stir, cover, let cool, use..

its just easier, and you dont have to do anything but add water and cover..

and the absolute number one best part.. no doodoo.. the smell, the thought.. you say "doodoo"? I say "DontDont"..

hahahaha

im pretty sure the trash bags are for lining the bottom of tubs, and ive read to put the tubs in the bags for a period of time before fruiting...correct me if wrong.

i wouldnt know where to get any poo, dont really wanna mess with it either. so im gonna stay away from it. im with dj on this.

doesnt vermiculite have a naturally high ph?

and any recommendations on innoculating? better results with syringe? agar?

im not sure about the ph in verm.. i never paid any attention to it..

if you REALLY want the best way to inoculate, then isolate on agar, then transfer a wedge to lc, then inoculate grain, spawn to bulk.. lol..

but, if you are doing multispore, then you can direct inject a bit right into the jars..

fuck poop.. lol

Yes for "lining the bottom" and
No to "put the tubs in the bags for a period of time before fruiting" This is outdated.

I think, the easiest way would be the best way for the first attempt.

I've really gotten to love getting up close and personal with another animal's excrement. But seriously the poo doesnt smell bad at all and you can pasteurize it exactly the same as you do with coir. I just break up 7 litres of poo in a 5 gal. bucket, add 8 cups of verm and mix, then put ~400g of coir pieces to the top. I then boil 7 litres of H2O and pour it all over the contents of the bucket, put on the lid and cover with a towel for 24 hours. The coir expands and seals in the moisture and heat which pasteurizes over the 24 hours. Hpoo contains WAAAY more nutrients than coir so you should have bigger/better flushes.

And by the way, if you live in a very dry environment, keeping the tubs in a trash bag helps keep the humidity up to an acceptable level. I happen to live in a place with 15% humidity and the trash bags help a lot, though I havent gotten my system fine tuned yet.

Also, if you use agar your colonization process will go more quickly because there are no spores to germinate first.

then what do you do to keep it away from light while colonizing?

the Zoo man.... get your your nearest zoo and they give tons of it. Otherwise they throw it out so they prefer to give it to someone who will use it. And, don't worry about them asking questions, they won't, seriously.

but WHY go through allllllll that trouble, when you can simply go to a hydro or pet store, and get coir? idunno.. it just doesnt make sense why you would want to go out of your way to get doodoo, when a perfectly suitable, easily available alternative is around?

yea Yosha's right, You're better with coir. You can use so many different substrate, I've seen people use hpoo, coir, newspaper, wood chips, BRF, straw, cardboard, etc, etc... The fact is that shrooms will grow on many things... Poo is the way to go for some species but with many other species, coir works just as well. But I'd say the ones I prefer are coir, straw and wood chips.
