DJYoshaBYD said: well, with the verm, you can just sterilize.. no prob..
the cool thing about 5050, is it will change color, indicating the need to mist for moisture..
buuuutttt, a TRUE casing layer is non-nutritious, and coir or peat have yummies that things like trich, in particular, loooovee to live on..
you can sterilize the verm in a canning jar, just like you would prepare anything in a jar.. let it cool, then spread over the top, just like any other casing..
depending on your FC, you would probably only need to mist once per day after the second day.. thats how it was in my martha, but your misting needs will vary with natural climate and FC design..
i stopped using 5050 and never looked back.. lol.. it can take some time to know when its time to mist..
one way to judge is to maybe put a small tray with just some casing in there, and run everything like you would for fruiting, testing the verm once or twice per day, checking for moisture content, and misting when needed.. when you squeeze the verm in your fingers, it should baaarely let a drop out.. maybe a full drop.. you want it moist, but not wet.. its not hard though..
sterile technique is just as important, if not more important than anything else.. keep that in mind when working inside of your FC..

Luger0815 said: For the first attempts i can only suggest you to make a sub with Coir 80%, Verm 18% and Gypsum 2%. This mix is nearly "fail save" Pretty much resistant to contams!!
I was going with peat instead of coir because I can get it locally while that store doesn't have coir. Trying to design an easy tek around my lifestyle that I can use to produce all 3 of these guys.
I'll give your straight verm a try in a month or so. It is out of season in my area so not stocked. Hate paying internet prices(mainly shipping costs) and need what I have for my substrates.
Just to make sure I haven't read something wrong and am correct in my thinking here, maybe you could tell me if this is right or wrong... It is my understanding that peat was non nutritious( at least when it comes to the needs of mushroom myc ?) but did contain beneficial bacteria. Pasteurizing killed the bad stuff while not killing off all of the beneficial. The beneficial bacteria in turn also helped to keep away other contams. This being a reason for using it, not just that it's easy to see when it's dry. I was tired and not thinking ahead when I sterilized it and by doing so I essentially created a nice breeding ground for trich by killing of it's natural competition..the beneficial bacteria.
To Blindbat...I see no one else commented on what you said. I'll say my piece and maybe you can wait for a few other responses as well. In my year and a half of reading these forums everyday I have never read about anyone using peat as their main ingredient in a substrate. As stated above, My understanding that it does not contain sufficient amounts of nutrients for mushrooms. If using peat instead of coir worked in the substrate I don't think anyone (I'm sure prices vary in areas) would be paying 18 dollars for 3 bricks of coir when you can get 50 pounds of peat for 25
