I raced for years.  I rode on the street less than 10 times.  It's sick out there.  I'd be doing 180mph on the track at Daytona cool as a cucumber.  Put me on the street and I'm hyper worried and sweating waiting for that 18-wheeler, or texting bitch to turn me into a grease spot.  No way bub.  BE CAREFUL KIDS!!!

Yeah.  I got a motorcycle.  Got it for $50.  Still in the process of putting it back togehter though (it came disassembled, and i've completely restored the internals.  I've been working on it for nearly a year).

^ thats gonna be a pretty sweet ride when its done, And I love knowing every nook and cranny of the vehicle im driving, like being able to look at it and knowing absolutely that thats some solid shit right there.

Ive got my sights on a f800gs atm, have a bike licence but no decent ride, and the thought of loading up a beautiful dual sport and heading off to wherever sounds amazing, that and ive been browsing some of the advrider.com ride reports and my go some of the adventures these guys have gone on are incredible.

It's not necessarily the size of you vs. the bike (unless you're big and the bike is small) as most bikes are pretty well balanced. It's more how you respect the throttle on a larger bike. Many people don't and that's one of the quickest ways to get a bad case of road rash. They're like shrooms or firearms or anything else. the second you get cocky and disrespectful, the teeth come out.

I'm planning on doing the same in a year or two.  With an old Triumph Bonneville most likely.

i have a ninja 250r that i bought a few years ago as my first bike. its cheap to ride and maintain, ultra reliable and will out-accelerate 90% of the cars on the road (not to mention a top speed of 105 mph).

The only downside is combined the bike and i weigh only about 500 lbs so getting blown around on the freeway can be nerve-wracking. Other than that it is a great beginner bike IMO

I might get this bike soon, it's up to the owner type situation. Any thoughts on this bike?

Make sure you're mechanically able, or are willing to learn to be, before you invest in one would be my advice. It's an important part of becoming harmonious with your machine to know how she fits together and how to service her properly.

They're not my cup of tea (I like very fast and nimble bikes), although I WILL be renting a Harley when I make it to the states, just for the experience. My cousin recently got one of these and absolutely loves it:

But he's a far more relaxed and sedate man than I. If you feel it's the kind of bike that matches your personality, I say go for it.

I will be buying a bike next year.  Having a motorcycle is on the top of my bucket list

I would love a Ducati diavel or the victory gunner.  I like Harley's and believe the stigma for them is unwarranted.  It stems from the old days.  I know many happy Harley owners who have not had to do anything but the standard maintenance on their bikes.

Still, as nice as I feel they are, I think they are over priced.  And I like Victorys better

Good for you Masked. Getting my bike license is one of the best things I've ever done. It's a path so filled with passion, connectedness and freedom, so if they're you're things you're gonna fucking love it.

Either of those bikes will have fucking bags of character. Good choices. I'd go with the Duc but I'm biased... Keep me posted man!!

Thanks man.  And you nailed it, all the reasons I need to ride

Here, it's a graduated licensing program.  I went in 3 seperate occasions to get my learners via multiple choice testing.  3 times, it expired after a year.  Restrictions with a learners are that I need to ride with someone in sight that has full class, can't ride at night, no passengers and can't exceed 90km/h or something of that nature

You have to do a parking lot test, navigating cones and such, to lift all restrictions except the passenger one I believe

After parking lot test, you have 2 years to take a full on road test to get your full class and lift all restrictions

There is a local course that supplies a little 250 Suzuki and in one weekend gets your learners and parking lot test banged off and ready for the road test.  It's 700 bucks and I'm thinking its a good investment for a guy with limited time on bikes.  It's apparently a well done weekend course

So I've booked the course for the spring.  Then hope to go in and buy a new bike for the riding season!

Plan to do any riding or visiting in Canada man?

Edit:  I should note that I'm heavily leaning towards the diavel.  The more videos and reviews I watch...wow.  And what a sexy ficking bike

It would probably be free, it's my mates dads bike and he really can't ride it anymore. I have only ridden a few times but have great balance and can maintain control (won't open it up just because I can). I know it would be an investment of some time and learning to own one. The only other bike I had and rode consistently was a little 250 yamaha street bike.

Sounds like your tests are setup a lot like ours these days. In fact the test changing to the new '2 part' (on road and in paved area with cones) came in a week after I passed the old style test - the only reason I did it then is cause I heard that it was gonna change - it was one of those things that had been on the back burner for a while...

I took a 5 day intensive, cost about £700, with the final test on the last day. It's fucking easy if you're a proficient driver, I passed with 2 minors, both for not doing my 'lifesaver' check (which I now do religiously on bike or in car). As my examiner said after I passed 'now it's time for the real learning to begin'. Took me a few months to get round to getting my first bike too, and a couple of years before I became an all weather biker. I took things real easy for a long time, and it's a skill you never stop learning.

It's such a great skill to become proficient at though; you become a waaaaay better driver, hugely more safe and aware, and your mechanical harmony goes through the roof as time goes by. Plus, biker camaraderie, passion for the machine, and the feeling of freedom. Man, I could wax lyrical about it all day.

Not sure about Canada. I was planning to be over in the states next month and was gonna fly into Vancouver as it's a much cheaper way to make it across. But I've had to can the trip this year as priorities have come up surrounding my permanent move to Australia and I need to be over there in December. I'd really love to check Canada out, in fact if it wasn't for my Aussie passport I'd be aiming to move there instead. I'll keep you posted.

As for the Diavel, I think you'll find it's a much better bike to ride. I haven't tested it but a mate has and he says you wouldn't believe how light it feels. Having had my frist Duc for a year now and tested many, many bikes over the years (another bonus - it's not like you can walk into a Ferarri dealership as a driver and get a test, but top of the line bikes are yours when you want them!) I can vouch for how unbelievably pleasurable they are to ride. So finely balanced. Have you seen the 'X' model? Fucking smoking hot:

Reading your post makes my itch to ride even worse

:raisemyglass:

And yes that X model is fucking so sexy :laugh:rool:  That's the one I'm eyeing up

I'm totally almost sold on that being the bike I want

Well, if you ever make it to Vancouver, I'm an 8-10 hour detour from the big city and you are more than welcome to stop by and have a place to crash for a few nights.  Perhaps I'll have my license by then and we may be able to go for a ride through my neck of the woods

Other than the Hyperstrada, which I bought after testing it on a whim, the only other bike I've test rode (out of the dozens I have) that made me instantly want to buy it was the Aprilia RSV4.

Only problem was, it was £16,000, rather than the £8,000 I spent on the Duc..

All I really want these days though is a CR500AF; super light-weight, with that 2-stroke noise, smell, and powerband:

Plus that riding position is the fucking nuts.

Although an Aprilia SXV 550 would do the trick too...

Nice bikes man!  They don't fit my personality tho.  Crotch rockets especially.

I'm the cruiser guy.  Want something loud.

I didn't know Ducati made a cruiser and when I saw one in town the other day I instantly hit the web.  It's like the perfect mix of that cruiser I'm looking for with the sportage of the famed Ducati

Still...those bikes are sexy as fuck.  Especially that second one

You'll get loud if you get a Duc. The soundtrack is to die for, best sounding bikes going IMO. Here's a quick clip of mine I made on the way home the other night:
