Any motorcyclist's here in the pub?
    #14000693 - 02/21/11 11:19 AM (12 years, 11 months ago)

I was thinking of getting a motorcycle soon. I have always wanted one, but I thought they all were like 10 grand or more even if they were used. I don't know why I thought they were so out of my reach, but I looked into it finally and found I could get a used bike for 1k-3k that is pretty decent.

I know every motorcycle guy says to get a Harley, but honestly I can't afford even a used one of those. I'm looking more at a Honda Shadow. They look pretty decent and it's pretty much what I'm looking for in a bike. I know a lot of guys that started out on a Shadow just to finally get a bike. It might not be the best, but it was THEIRS they say.

Anyways, Here is generally what I'm looking for:

2001 Honda Shadow 750 ACE - $2800

"Priced to Sell. 11,506 miles. Looks good, runs good. Price includes: Joe Rocket padded jacket (Med.), to helmets, saddle bags and a set of straight pipes. Selling because I'm getting out of the cycle business."

I have been looking at ad's on craigslist and keep finding awesome deals like this. I was just wondering if there was anyone on here that actually knows if this is going to be a decent type of bike. Anyone here own a Shadow or have in the past?

I just wanna get a bike and ride.  :rebelride:

IF I had a lot of property I would get one of those as well. I wouldn't have a place to play with it. :frown:

When I was younger I begged for a 4 wheeler or a dirt bike but my parents refused to even talk about it. My uncle lost a leg in a motorcycle accident and another uncle almost died. They assume I will be a retarded coked out drunk like they were and get myself killed or something.

Oh well. I'm 31 this year and if I don't get something soon I'm afraid I just never will. My wife keeps telling me to wait till the kids are out of the house. Yeah right.

Rode a 600 Shadow once. Was a GREAT ride. Really well balanced. Honda makes good bikes, and unless you want to join a gang/MC, IMO there's no reason to buy a Harley. They are really overpriced.

Not knocking American made motorcycles though. Indian makes some of the best looking (and riding from what I've heard) bikes out there.

If it's your first bike, I wouldn't go over 600cc, and would probably recommended a 250-400/450 depending on your height and weight, at least until you get some experience driving under your belt.

Temporary American. I'd love to get a bike but after seeing the way other road users behave I remind myself that it's not a wise idea because of the lack of protection. I also saw the aftermath of a motorbike accident. The bike was in one spot and the biker's body was many many metres away in another spot. I'm not sure if he was alive or not but the image kind of sticks with you.

I've rode 4 wheelers and dirt bikes, but not motorcycles at all. I'm definitely not going to be joining any motorcycle "clubs" anytime soon. I don't even think we have any around here. I would be mostly riding country roads and the highway. I've always wanted to drive somewhere further away and just camp out as I go. That would be awesome.

I'm a pretty decent sized guy and I think I can handle a bigger bike.

I've been restoring a 1981 Honda CB900c for the last five years, and this summer will be the first time I'll ride it.  It's kinda intimidating because it's so big, so I got a 1973 CL450 to poke around on while I finish the other one and build up some skills.  I'm a big guy, and the old 450 will still accelerate fast as fuck.

Old Japanese bikes are pretty easy to work on, and a lot of fun.  Parts are usually readily available and relatively inexpensive.

Proficient Motorcycling, by David L. Hough is a great book to check out.  It explains the fundamentals of operating a motorcycle well and safely, and learning to minimize risk by developing good riding habits.

TY very much! That's the type of info I'm also looking for.

I definitely want to be safe as possible. I will have my wife on the back of the thing more often than not, so safety is my number 1 priority.

I was thinking of picking up a $500 old shadow that is for sale down the street just to poke around on it. It's smaller and old, but it still runs pretty good. I know how to ride from dirt bikes and 4 wheelers, but I know it isn't the same so practice would be welcomed. I don't want to dump a bike that looks good and costs me 3k.

Wow nice roger! I'm not good at making money like that. I always want to give people the best deals and never make money for myself. I need to get more aggressive when it comes to making money.

That's a great deal.  If it runs, it's worth $500, and you're exactly right about wanting to dump something you don't feel too bad about.  Gaining a level of comfort riding on the street will definitely carry over to whatever other bikes you might ride.

Definitely check that book out, it's mandatory reading for any motorcyclist.

Harleys fucking suck.  You'll be fixing it or shining it up more than you ride it.

Dual sport machines are the way to go if you ever want to get away from anyone.  They are also the most fun imo and the least dangerous (they are more prone to staying vertical than most other bikes).

You should not pay more than 2k or so for your first bike.  Get it and have fun with it for a year or so.

I wouldn't buy a shadow with 11.5k miles on it for almost 3k.  I picked up a Rebel for 1k (1050 exactly) with 4.5k miles on it.

Edit: Also, don't think you will "outgrow" a beginner bike.  Wtf do you really want to do?  My 250 rebel can go 85 top speed and can usually out-accelerate most vehicles on the road, especially from a stop (including many "fast" cars).  It definitely lacks for power on the interstate, so maneuvering around people, switching lanes, etc. is limited at speeds above 60 or so, but it's still a very adequate machine for everything except the track imo and I've had it going on 2 and a half years now.

$500 sounds like a great price for a bike.  Hopefully it works without having to put any work into it; even then unless it's something difficult or expensive you should be able to do it yourself with minimal effort.

My first bike was a Honda Twinstar 200cc bike. It was a cheap cruiser looking thing that my friends call a "Hardly a Davidson". I learned to ride on that, and I would rather still have that bike that a bigger one. I weigh 250 and that bike could accelerate faster than fat-assed hogs.

Now, I have an old school 1967 Triumph Chopper - cut in the 60's. It is nice, but that cheap Honda was way more reliable. Also, alot of the "I'm so pretty that I need to polish my chrome every day and replace my jacket if it gets a scratch" Harley riders have way-too-pretty bikes. My 67 has the original chrome, flacking with rust, but a perfectly polished Harley rider will give me shit cause his bike is worth more - and to that I say "Who, the bank?".

My old bike is origional fucked up american chopper. 1950's carbs and a modified World War II aircraft magneto modified. No battery needed. You cannot buy that at a mall like a Harley.

A true biker will not care what make your ride is, cause modern Harleys are hardley made in america, and some are just strait foreign.

Go Cheap and have fun.

I did and still do. Keep it safe though, cause your worst enemy will be a distracted driver! - So true that I do not feel safe driving in certain cities. Never underestimate a piece-of-shit-driver while on a 2 wheeler!
