Help w/ my ancient pressure cooker?
    #14000450 - 02/21/11 10:34 AM (12 years, 11 months ago)

I got friended this thing and I'm hoping I can make it work..

I had to add the bolt you see pictured to the little silver part in order to make it stay in. I don't have any idea what the original part was or how it's supposed to work.

Here's the problem:
The little silver part pops up when it starts to heat up and then stays up blowing out steam. The rocker never moves at all. I've had it up to 350 degrees on the dial for about 20 minutes and still the rocker hasn't moved. I don't have a clue what pressure it's cooking at.

Could somebody set me straight on this thing? I have never used a PC so I might not be understanding something pretty basic..

Am PC'ing LC jars which are supposed to go 20 mins. at 15 psi.

well, the little silver part that pops up is supposed to completley block the steam after it pops up. Perhaps try adjusting it to the point where it doesn't allow steam through.

Also be sure to check to make sure the rocker isn't clogged before you start. As you will have just made a nice little bomb if that's the case.

That being said. If you don't know much about pressure cookers I wouldn't suggest playing around with them like that when their broken. You can find real decent ones for 40-70 bucks.

yeah.. what he said..

like, what i usually do with my old one, is heat it up, to the point where the water is giving off steam or almost boiling, close the lid and seal it, the I wait until the steam start to come through the vent, then i just pull up the valve and hold it for a moment.. after a few seconds, it will stay in place, sealing the PC..

but this is my pressure cooker, and all of them are different.. kinda, anyway..

have you tried looking up the make and model of your PC online, and trying to find the actual instructions? that might help, as it may explain how to adjust that valve in the correct manner for that particular PC..

That is a low pressure chicken cooker, only goes to 5 PSI.
Sorry, totally unsuitable, and unsafe without the proper parts.
Presto won't supply parts either, too many problems and too many worries...something about cooking oil being under pressure at high temperatures.

maybe take it to a goodwill or something, see if they have a pressure cooker there that you can use, and maybe they will trade or you can sell it to them for credit and buy the other..

try craigslist, too.. im getting a new PC for 25 bucks on there..

If I get the silver valve closed do you think I could just add a three piece rocker set? how could the pressure inside then be any different? mechanically the same as any PC?

I was afraid of it being unsafe too but aside from the relief valve it's really just a stem with a rocker on it. There's no way I can see that thing is ever a bomb with the stem unobstructed.

On my grandmothers you always had to heat it up and then put the rocker on when the steam stared coming out the hole and touch the weight with your finger to get it rocking. I don't know about release valve though, and I don't recommend touching the weight either you could get burned...

If only you could find a pressure gauge that would thread into that release valve you could get it to the right temp and pressure to "rock" it. Don't get your hopes up on that one though. I once saw a guy take off running out of wal-mart with a 36 inch flat-screen T.V. and get away with it. I'm sure he could have ran even faster if he was just stealing a pressure cooker.:hansen2:

yeah I don't think it's quite what I need but thx.

I just reread the posts and they're all super helpful. I think I'm just gonna hold off on it and buy a real one when I can.

I would guess the rocker that's on it now is weighted to 5psi or so as it is a 'low pressure' cooker. So that won't work. Presto's site is no help either. I'm still doing jars anyway.

Gonna go find out if I can make LC without one..
