Alcohol Lamps, Lighters--Forget It! Blow Torches Are Where It's At

by the time you buy an alcohol candle and denatured alcohol, you're in the ~$15 range already so you may as well spend the extra $5 and get yourself one of these! it gets the needle red-hot in 2-3 seconds. butane lighters do the same but they're so small easy to knock over. blow torch is a much better value proposition i'd recommend it

what happens if you knock the blow torch over? if it will heat a needle red hot in seconds, then it will light your carpet and possibly other shit on fire VERY quick..
and you can get alcohol lamps for next to nothing at a goodwill or your local salvation army store.. you just have to look a lil..
i mean, really good idea.. i just think its overkill and dangerous..
not to mention it costs more than that alcohol lamp and the alcohol put together if you dont have a blow torch and bottle..
i assume you already had one, judging by the safety mask, bolt drawers, and drill in the pic, in what looks like a garage.. haha

haha that's not my picture. actually it cost like $18 at Lowe's for the whole kit and it has a nice stable base attached on it to avoid knock-overs like a space heater. but i feel it's safer because the flame is angled and higher, meaning you're never working OVER your flame. small torch lighters don't have a base to keep them from tipping over, they're usually small and narrow like a zippo, plus they usually require one hand to operate which means you have to put the lighter down after using it since they don't stay on. it's only overkill if it is capable of more than i need and all i need is for it to efficiently heat my needle and scalpel, which it does without a hickup. i think it's more badass perfect kill than overkill.

guess i'm not lucky enough to find an alcohol candle at a goodwill or whatever and trust me i'm there a lot looking for mycology equipment. my fuckin alcohol candle cost like $10 at the science supply store and denatured alcohol for a small container is in the $8 range. fuck that for $20 i'd rather have a multi-tasking device like a torch that can be used outside of mycology. wtf can i do with an alcohol candle besides science stuff?
safety-wise i feel if you're working with fire you should take the exact same precautions regardless of whether its a blow torch or a shotglass with denatured alcohol anyway. ii still advocate the blow torch after having used it compared to a candle.

Use a lighter, like the one, you use for smoking crack.

There ya go! Thats more like it.
-----------
Don't forget to keep the flame super low and aim it away from your work area or you will blow things you don't want into you cultures.
