Its all instructor dependent in the US. MY first time i got a pretty big stickler. I failed because the "One Way" was written on the street not on a sign so I didnt notice and pulled into the far lane and not the close one.
Never been so bummed.......
Took it a bit later and passed easily, different instructor but whatevs......
The funny thing is, you can pass that test and be a TERRIBLE fucking driver. It takes experience, intelligence, and caution to drive well. IMHO

Wait...what??? What exactly did they want you to use the handbrake for? Were you making a turn from off the main road from the centre lane?
I drive manual too, but a handbrake while driving? The only time I use my handbrake is when I'm parking my vehicle. I used to use it when I first started driving manual if I was stopped in traffic facing uphill. I used to be afraid that I wouldn't be fast enough with the clutch and roll back too far and hit the car behind me. I'm good with the clutch now and I never do that anymore.
I was doing the 3 point turn and driving to the other side, was half way when someone turned up wanting to get by. The rule is you have to stop (no matter where you are in the road) pull up the handbrake, look at them, put it back down then manouveur out of the way.
No one would do that in reality but there the rules!

I'm not understanding the hand brake. I never pull my handbrake while the engine is running, ever. Are there circumstances where it's required?

Yeah I can't fathom how that handbreak thing works... Seems stupid and dangerous as far as I'm concerned.
My car has no handbreak I think I'd be fucked on this test then

Some cars are particularly difficult to keep from stalling so dropping the anchor, quickly starting from neutral, and then releasing it after you shift to first is easier. Some really shitty cars do this, and really powerful ones I would imagine also jump the gun real easy.

i worked with a guy from Dublin a few years ago. he said "In Ireland, you are tested to see if you have the ability to drive. In the US, you are tested to see if you have the desire to have the ability to drive."
Sounds about right to me..

in the case of failure in hydraulic brakes it's a must, it's also used extensively in drifting and stunt drving
in normal driving, it's pointless and dangerous

The only thing you pay here is 27 bucks for your license. The test must be easy cause too many assholes drive that shouldn't be driving cause they don't know how to.

Agreed, pointless. Modern brake systems are cross-coupled. A (surprise, catastrophic) brake failure is somewhat less likely than a lightning strike.
(I did realize I pull the brake with the engine on while I'm at the ATM. The car is too low, so I get out to do my banking. But I leave the car running in case I have to leave quickly. Other than that, never.)

For my test the only thing I did wrong was stop to check for traffic when there wasn't a stop sign. Excuse me for being careful, I guess next time I'll just blast through the street from a cul-de-sac. I still passed easily though. I would never want to be a drivers education instructor. I think that is one of the more stressful jobs that I can think of.

Did anybody else just get out of the car at the end of the test? I stopped and parked, took off the seat belt, and started to get out.
"Wait, don't you want to know if you passed?!?"
"I passed. Are you saying I didn't?"
"No, you passed. People just want to know."
"Well, I know how to drive, and I knew I did this correctly... are we done? Is there more paperwork?"
This was a long time ago, it still weirds me out a bit.

The test is easy.
You don't even have to parallel park, just 3 point.
First time I got an auto fail for not entering the serrated bike lane when making a right hand turn.
Did not make that mistake the second time.
U.S. drivers= horrible.

I went there two years ago. There are so such things as lanes or anything like that. It's just madness. Absolute madness.

I failed my first time - I remember just being weirded out by this bitchy, fat DMV lady in my passenger seat when I had to parallel park.
But basically they make you parallel park and drive around in a circle. It's not really hard, just don't get nervous, and watch out for their tricks; such as not putting their seatbelt on and auto failing you.
Fucking hate the DMV though, I think that has to be the most depressing, angry, inconvenient, loud place ever. Well, now that I think about it those might be traits for every government operation.

You can take it online. I know I am.
Most of it is common sense, if you are a retard you don't pass the test.
