Hey guys, I'm pretty new to cultivating and was just wondering- What is dunking and flushing, and some advantages/disadvantages?

do you mean dunk and roll?
when your cake is colonizing in the jar it loses moisture so once fully colonized you birth it, then dunk it for 24 hours to replace all the moisture that lost during the colonization, then roll in verm so when its in your fruiting chamber to help retain moisture when you mist..

disadvantages are none the mycellium needs lots of water to sustain itself. cakes are prone to moisture loss, and the dunk and roll will improve flushes and keep the cakes viable for extended periods of time. this allows for multiple healthy flushes to occur.

Thanks a lot!
on another note, what is birthing?
and colonizing is what happens after you inoculate the substrate, waiting for mycelium to grow, correct?
Thanks again

birthing is when u take your fully colonized cake out of the jar and exspose it to the fresh air, when the cake is in the jar its all co2 in there.....
colonization is what the myc does to the cake, it "grows" or colonizes so yes.

About 9 years ago I bought this.
A little dated but well worth it IMO. Learned a lot and still use it too look up growth parameters. Everyone reads to learn. just some do it more than others. You will find yourself more successful the more you read.
Edit: Oh yeah It is great book for storing your prints in too... Has a good weight to it.
