Fuck bliss. Peace is dead and boring. I'm trying to say that awakening is not at all what most people say it is.

Otherwise more people would be awake, look around man.

There is a world of difference between mystical states / Samadhis / integral awareness and the awakened state / Nirvana / non-dual awareness.

There are many of the former but only one latter. The former do not usually lead to the latter, or vice-versa.
In fact those who are best at high-dosing, yoga, and meditation are most likely to have Samadhi but least likely to awaken.

Awakening can spontaneously occur at any stage of cognitive development.
It's like getting struck by lightning, those who try to make it happen waste their time.
I'm not saying that one is better than the other, we just need to get our concepts clear.

On the whole Buddhist drug debate, the Buddha states that:

“Do not believe in anything simply because you have heard it. Do not believe in anything simply because it is spoken and rumored by many. Do not believe in anything simply because it is found written in your religious books. Do not believe in anything merely on the authority of your teachers and elders. Do not believe in traditions because they have been handed down for many generations. But after observation and analysis, when you find that anything agrees with reason and is conducive to the good and benefit of one and all, then accept it and live up to it.”

Also, many Buddhist have gotten their start in Buddhism because of a psychedelic drug trip.

:aum:

I used to post in a Buddhist forum, and was a bit dismayed at how much the topic of psychedelia was suppressed, so much that there were maybe 2 threads out of 50,000 dedicated to their discussion and both were closed quickly and quietly, even though they were pertinent to spiritual practice.

It's funny because yeah, almost all the famous Western Buddhist teachers had their start with LSD -- I mean really, pretty much 100% of them -- and psychedelics have played an enormous role -- probably the critical role -- in the growth of Eastern Religion in the West.

“Strengthened by contemplation and study,
I will not fear my passions like a coward.
My body I will give to pleasures,
to diversions that I’ve dreamed of,
to the most daring erotic desires,
to the lustful impulses of my blood, without
any fear at all, for whenever I will—
and I will have the will, strengthened
as I’ll be with contemplation and study—
at the crucial moments I’ll recover
my spirit as was before: ascetic.”
