plus a good portion of software i use isnt available on mac. The argument that I can use parallels or whatever it is is just another step out of the way. Why buy a mac to run it as xp?

Theyre great computers, but I think a well designed PC would dust a mac every time.

daytripper5 makes a lot of good points.

I have to agree that Apple makes, hands down, the best laptops in terms of construction quality, aesthetics and security, deep down, at the kernel level, due to its BSD base.

I have for long time thought there would have to be companies that make similar quality machines for several hundred dollars less, as everyone always says there are.  But up until HP came out with the Envy series, I had not seen many laptops that compare, at any price.

I'll agree macs are a couple hundred dollars overpriced, but for the most part you get what you pay for.  Their trackpads are second to none, and that alone makes the laptop experience far better.

Imacs are ridiculously overpriced.  Mac Pros are only slightly overpriced, but they are just such overkill.  Almost no one needs that kind of processing power.

Out of curiosity, if anyone knows any laptops that are really nice, please link up, I'm curious to see what's out there.

Sidenote:  I'm really stoned, so I thought of this after writing all that.  Thinkpads are very nice machines as well.

One is chock full of proprietary hardware that wouldn't even be proprietary if that physical layer wasn't branded. Fuck Apple elitism.

Thinkpads are the best overall I would argue.  I load Linux and Windows on mine, personally I don't even like the Mac OS.  I think its really cumbersome and inefficient.  But I recognize a lot of people find it easy to use.

Do you run XP for your version of Windows?
I've heard quite a bit of arguing over XP and Windows 7.
I neeed to downgrade my laptop to XP because it can't handle Vista at all, but some people tell me to go to 7. I don't think it's good enough to handle 7 either, plus I want the most available memory possible.

Windows 7 has been pretty decent so far, no big complaints as far as usability or stability go.

I still prefer XP over windows 7. I can't imagine how you find the Mac OS cumbersome or inefficient. I can access any portion of my computer within seconds using Spotlight. Once you learn to use all of the features it is MUCH more efficient than windows. And I used to be a mac hater.

There's no arguing over Windows XP or 7 - 7 is WAY better in absolutely every way, including memory management.  If you can handle XP, chances are 99% that you can run 7 as well.

Windows 7 can be a real pain to install on older hardware. I have had to hours worth of testing with bios settings when upgrading machines, especially on HP machines for some reason. Windows 7 was both the easiest and hardest version of Windows I have ever installed, just depends on the hardware.

I have a Windows 7 at my desk for usability testing at work, other wise I use a Mac or Linux all the time. The only think I need Windows for is IE, because it's baked into the system. (I am web and software developer.) It's not bad machine, but it's certainly not any good. Taking all other complaints out of the equation, the UI and user accessibility make me go insane when using it. Windows machine take way too many clicks and prior knowledge of where things are before drilling down to what you actually want. Seriously, the registry, start menu, and task bar can all go. They are worthless. I admit 7 is better than XP, but it's still not EVER worth using unless you are playing a PC games or using some legacy auto cad program or extremely specialized software.

Indeed. Anyone who things XP is better is fooling themselves. Vista was half arsed but Win7 is the first windows done right.

Indeed. I'd totally buy a macbook for the build quality/aesthetic value alone and dual or triple boot it. But i'd be getting almost half the specs for the same price as a diff brand. I have an HP Pavilion dv7 right now im pretty happy with. The build quality is really good and its pretty much a macbook ripoff in terms of design which is cool ;p
Only downside is being a desktop replacement laptop its pretty bulky/thick and its battery sticks out in the back. Battery life is amazing tho.

Lol. They have extremely good pawning value. I never leave my Apple stuff in line of site in my house, let alone actually leave a device in my car. If it gets stolen from my house, I have insurance for that.

The Envy keyboard looked to cramped. I would rather not have the number pad. The tracpad still has those line outlining the left and right click when touching the surface with one or two fingers would suffice. The Envy is certainly a PC would getting, but I would still rather get MacBook Air at that the same price which has a lot better batter life, a solid state drive, and all that have already been mentioned. I don't think specs == better value or a better user experience.

A feature worth noting that is often not talked about is the magsafe power adapter, which only Apple has. I am extremely careful about the placement of my machine and chords, but sometimes it's unavoidable to trip on them. I never have to worry about the cord getting damages or pulling my machine off the desk due to the inherent design and the way it detaches. It's the best connector on the market. I don't trip over it a lot, but when it happens I am thankful I have it. When I can say the same about other laptops, which almost always have a proprietary plug. All Apple machines use the same connector and have for years.
