Seems I've latched on to a conga of similarly titled threads, but a serious question to boot.

Depends.. do you follow anyone's teachings and only their teachings?
For example: Jesus/God has control over the christians.. Muhammad/Allah has control over the muslims.. My opinion of course.

hey i had this thought the other day too...
you see its paradoxical to try and lose control. trying being an act of control.
what i realized was that i do not actually have control. its like sometimes you think to yourself 'i am walking' 'i am talking' 'i am breathing' in other words you think 'you' are doing and controlling these things.
but you can do and have done all those things before without that thought of 'my control' attached.
for example i can tell you to 'take in a deep breath'. and so you do it and it feels like that act was under your control. but most of the time there is breathing without that feeling of your control attached, usually you don't even notice it.
we are always doing things, but its only about some of those things that the thought 'i am doing this' is attached. and the truth is that thought does nothing. it doesnt help or assist at all. it is not necessary to have anything done, it only seems to get in the way.
the truth is i think, you dont have any control to begin with. its just illusory.
one thing that was stopping me personally from letting go was the thought 'what if i do everything the same as now without control... it would make no differance.'
and while this is possible it shouldnt stop you. losing control no matter what you do after is a good thing.
all the things that bog you down, that you think 'why did i do that', 'i am so embarassed', 'i should have' etc slowly begin to fade away.
sorry this post is a bit of a ramble but hopefully u find something helpful in it. i have felt out of controlness but it is by no means a permant part of my existance yet. i still kind of am oscillating wildly between that freedom and my usual self consciousness and doubt...
anyways goodluck

Well, logically speaking, you can't control, yourself, because you ARE yourself.
Now the reason is because if you ARE something, you cannot manipulate it.
it is like trying to manipulate your self to believe that 1+1=3.
On the other hand, you can manipulate your mind. i think that is what your looking for.
The mind is different from the self. You utilize your mind and identify beliefs within the mind that are correct. However, the mind can still hold beliefs that you view as incorrect, hence the need to manipulate 'yourself'.
The way i think of 'yourself' as a concept, is that it is the mind.

I like the view known as compatibilism, which states that even if everything is deterministic, this does not invalidate free will. Of course this assumes a specific definition of "free will."
If I am interpreting it correctly, the idea is that free will is simply being able to do what you decide to do, even if that is predetermined; thus free will and determinism are compatible ideas.
If however you define "free will" as something that transcends causality, then yeah I'd agree, seems like an illusion to me.
