Alone Together: Why We Expect More from Technology and Less from Each Other

--Sherry Turkel

Quote:

Consider Facebook—it’s human contact, only easier to engage with and easier to avoid. Developing technology promises closeness. Sometimes it delivers, but much of our modern life leaves us less connected with people and more connected to simulations of them.
In Alone Together, MIT technology and society professor Sherry Turkle explores the power of our new tools and toys to dramatically alter our social lives. It’s a nuanced exploration of what we are looking for—and sacrificing—in a world of electronic companions and social networking tools, and an argument that, despite the hand-waving of today’s self-described prophets of the future, it will be the next generation who will chart the path between isolation and connectivity.

i deleted my account after 10 minutes, and all it told me was:

"You might find facebook more appealing if you had more friends!"

and i was like duh

i love hate-ranting about crap like that.

I don't see the point of these social media. I much prefer personal interaction. For me, face to face communication preceeed and postceeded (is that a word?) by a handshake or a cheek kiss is highly desireable. After many hours of personal contact with 30-40 people a day I am ready for quiet time. I don't want to manage a site(s) with that type of personal connection. This type of site is more suited to my life.

So ya, FB Twit and all the rest won't have me for a client.

i wished more ppl would think like that.
i mean it's not just that people talk/chat via fb, those pages have all kinds of purpose, now,
that, 10 years ago, everybody would've laughed about. i mean the whole idea is based
on social anxiety, if you see it radically: you want to get to know the chick in your
class? poke her! or whatever the facebook term is for this. no need for eye contact,
no need for intuitive & spontaneous conversation. all that crap about keeping in touch
with old friends etc. - i've never heard more bullshit.

pffff gets me all started. and then mr. zuckerberg sells the data the people themselves
publish on their own behalf. gosh how can ppl be that naive. or rather stupid.

Agreed, the whole business model is based on cyber contact. Google does the same thing with data, and I don't particularly like it. If I exchange an an email (gmail) with someone and they say the cows got out through the fence, then within moments there is advertizing for fences on the gmail home page. It is bullshit, but the service works well so I tolerate it. I will never click on one of those ads, even if I'm looking for something that is advertized.
I believe we are living a time between technologies that society will mark as having psychological consequences, and regret the shift to digital contact. Perhaps down the road when hologram projection becomes mainstream it will improve the personal contact aspect.
Up  until the last 30 years or so, people have been a personal contact species. This is a major shift away from that societal norm.
Personally, I love to see the look in someones eyes, and the smiles or frowns on their faces, especially when telling a joke or story. It is what makes us people.

Yeah, IDK. (I Don't Know. [AKA] I Do Know.) :tongue2:

I think facebook has its pro's and con's. It's good for communicating with loved ones that live on the other side of the country. It's a great way to keep in contact with people, and meet new people, but I don't think it should solely be used as a means for communication.

Moderation is key.

BTW I don't have a facebook, maybe i should make one?
I got too many thangs I gotta be doin' tho. O well.

Yes, I hear you on the the thangs to do! I still don't want an FB/TW account though.
I get the facebook idea of staying in touch, especially for groups of young people. I personally would rather not see someone for a week and then sit down with them, or play golf with them, and have a coffee or wine and catch up. The conversation gets taken into good interpersonal intellect, and emotion. And much more diversity and ground can be covered in a short time with conversation, than using a keboard. IMO, that is what we are all about.

The problem is people put too much personal info in public. Employers are scanning the SN sites for all the info thay can find on prospective new hires. Be very careful what you put out there people! Also, they link in to the account holders friends to see what kind of people they hang with. If your bros are druggies and you are not, chances are you will be flagged for rejection based on a FB/TW etc search.

Yeah I hear you, after reading that, I don't think I will want to make a FB account anytime soon. I rather unplug and just do thangs in a more natural way, instead of virtually.

This definitely pushes me away from facebook.

I remember back when facebook was actually really cool, for colleges only and thangs.
That was a really good way to meet new people who had the same interests as you regarding books, movies, and thangs at your own particular college. You could click on a book and see if anyone else in your college liked the same book. That was :awebig:
