Browning Shiitakes in jars or not?

I was wondering if I'm supposed to let my Shiitake cakes (WBS+) brown inside their jars or should I birth them into ziploc bags and let them brown in there? Would it be too hard to birth them is they brown in the jars? I also think the elevated CO2 levels in a sealed bag would benefit them, as I read that it's good to have CO2 levels around 3, 000ppm, and our atmosphere is closer to 300ppm.
Thanks

Why would you do that? When they are fully colonized spawn to hardwood sawdust and leave for several months to brown. They don't need to be brown before spawning, and you won't get good results fruiting from bird seed.

Don't knock it til you try it. I've seen some (one in particular) fantastic yields from Shiitake WBS cakes that weren't even browned.I don't have hardwood sawdust.

Sorry, but I don't think I'll ever try it. Fuel pellets are available almost everywhere. You should at least mix in some vermiculite as a water reservoir, bird seed doesn't hold nearly enough.

Thanks for the suggestion. I did add fir bark wood chips to the mix, but fyi, the jars are fully colonized already on the outside. The mycelium was extremely vigorous with 100% success (no contams with the Shiitakes) so so far so good.

Oh sorry, I just now saw you said "WBS cakes". I thought you had whole wbs jars, and wanted to fruit them that way... So you have cakes made of ground wbs mixed with verm and fir bark? Yeah, sure, that will probably work nicely! And to answer your original question, it's probably best to leave them in jars unntil they are ready to birth. Sorry again!

No problem I'm sorry if I wasn't clear. I don't have verm in the cakes unfortunately (didn't even think of it, totally should have) but there are wood chips and wbs. I will likely be casing half and fruiting the other half as cakes. Not sure yet............................... I may post some pics if it goes well. Thanks for all the advice Tangich!
