he might need to upgrade his ish then

I have a mid-summer 2009 model Macbook Pro 15", I paid a pretty penny for it at the Apple Store ($2200 out-the-door with tax) and i absolutely LOVE LOVE LOVE it.  i've never owned a single piece of technology better than this.  it's beautiful, functional, and easy to use.  I dabble in audio mixing and do lots of image editing in Adobe software, a little autoCAD here and there....i haven't had a single problem yet.

Really? I have a 2010 MBP and easily get 3-4 of use while running an external monitor and 4Gb work of stuff in memory. I can get 8 if I am cautious about usage and screen brightness. I feel the exact opposite with my machine.

His is a 2010 Macbook pro, I don't really know the specs on it though.
The problem is when you have a DAW pack open with 15 instances of NI VST's running, which tend to be big memory hogs.

Honestly, I could never afford a Mac until a year ago  and I too was skeptical. Since running Pro tools on my PC would always give me problems, I heard compatibility was not an issue with the Macs OS...thus me wanted one!
Bottom line, after about a month of using my MacBook Pro I am a converter.

I think in the last 6 and half years of owning Macs, I can count on one hand the amount of kernel panics I have had, and can't even remember the last time I have had one. There might be something wrong with his machine, which can happen to anything in this world.

OSX has a rule does not crash unless some other program does so, at which the blame can be put on whatever the application the user was and using and the user themselves. Applications are sandboxed, so generally when they crash they don't crash the OS. He may not know you can force quit a task. Also, if he is using an Adobe product to produce music, that is likely the culprit. Adobe products on the Mac have clunky legacy code and generally don't adhere to Apple's conventions.

Recently bought a macbook pro for school and I really love it. I was definitely a mac hater before but now I feel they each have their niche. I'd definitely take a macbook pro over an asus any day. Asus is kind of low quality imo. I've had a lot of problems with asus hardware.

I'll never be happy with the fact that there are compatibility issues with games until I finally bother to dual boot.

The Magic tracpad is way better. I quit using the Magic mouse the instant I got the tracpad. I use my Macbook Pro with an external monitor on a desk at work, and on my lap at home, so it's a desktop for most of it's use and thus a need for peripherals. It's a preference thing, but I love the gigantic tracpad. It's a lot better than the one built into the machine because of the form. The function is the same, but the larger surface, angle, and mobility like a mouse make for the ultimate pointing device. I would like the Magic Mouse more if it had all the gestures the tracpad has.

Hmm...going to have to look into this.  I like having a mouse in my hand though.  How is the transition from using a mouse to being the new operator of a trackpad?

Like 5 minutes. I remember when I went from a desktop running windows to a macbook I never ever looked back.

The price isn't worth the perks.  If you're into video editing, get a mac, if you want to surf the shroomery, play video games, and check e-mail, get a pc.

Well if you're going to pull the opinion card, everything in this thread is just an opinion. Nothing is inherently better or worse than anything else, it just depends on preferences and what you want to get out of it.

Except what he said is not true. Macs can more than the average windows machine. Macs are intel based which means they can run Windows or Linux. Windows machine can't just stick OSX in and install it. So my computer can run software on either Windows or Mac, whereas you cannot. So the very nature of Macs not being able to do as much is not true. Additionally, whatever it is you are doing on a Windows machine, can be done in some way on Mac. It's extreme ignorance to think people using Macs are missing out on something because software isn't available. It's not 1998 anymore.

I hear nothing but good things about the apple video editor or w/e.  What software is better than apple's on pc?  I don't video edit anyway though.. so I have a pc lol.

I agree macs are very powerful and yes I know they can dual boot.  You can also get hackintosh for windows machines.

In general macs are built much better than PCs and you have to pay a premium for that.  I love my friends macbook pro it seems so solid and will last a while but I sure as hell can't afford it.
