Ratio for fast colonization (pic)
    #13994906 - 02/20/11 10:35 AM (12 years, 11 months ago)

I'm using aluminum baking pans and was wondering, having never spawned to bulk before, if this looks like a decent amount of spawn to use (2 qt jars per pan). It's WBS to horse manure...

It should be close to a 1:1 ratio so it's more than enough. You can even use less spawn. Your choice. But do not forget to use a trash bag, otherwise the mycelium will eat the aluminium.

The pans hold 6 quarts of water to the very top, and that was measured filling my quart jars to the brim with water, where each colonized spawn jar is about an inch full from the top. Seems hard to believe that this is a 1:3 ratio or even less though...hopefully that will be enough as I have 16 pans i'd like to make and exactly 32 jars of spawn

You are fine. Don't worry. Those trays will be fully colonized in 5-10 days. Good luck

sweet. I understand the use of the trash bag insofar as sliding the tray in one to keep light out and CO2 in during colonization...are you suggesting that I also use another piece of plastic to avoid contact of the substrate/spawn and the aluminum?
Also, as far as casing is concerned, will it dramatically increase my yield, and if I choose to case should I wait until the trays are fully colonized to add the layer?
thanks

Exactly. Aluminium is not good for your health. We don't know if the fruitbodies absorb the aluminium dissolved by the mycelium. But there is no need to take unnecessary risks, right? Better safe than sorry.

No, it won't increase your yield. But if your ambient humidity is very low, I suggest you to case (50/50 verm/peat moss). And yes, we add the casing layer once the trays are fully colonized. During the winter season I always case my trays.
