I bet I know someone on here who would LOVE this movie...
Just finished it. It's tough to keep a single scene movie going for 90 minutes but I think they did a good job. The last 20 minutes was worth the first hour all day long!

I didn't see it quite that way. I found it interesting that in the credits Samuel L is under "black" and Tommy Lee Jones "white". Although they were probably categorizing them by their skin color, I thought this was crude and saw it in a different light. Samuel's character was filled with beliefs, which aren't necessarily profitable. On the other hand Tommy Lee Jones' character seemed to accept, although cynically, the impermanence of the human experience. They both had qualities I admired and loathed. IMO, The transience of the human experience doesn't mean we aren't getting something out of this on some unperceived level. What Samuel describes as the "source" could be benefiting from the play of human existence.

It was OK but they were both being far too dramatic/whiney about it all IMO.

I like it when I hear stuff like that from Shakespeare but most of the time I can't stand to sit through any stage reproductions of his work. I don't know whether that's because it's hard to act/direct or it's just my shitty concentration. Mind you, I did use to love a midsummer night's dream when I was a kid.

I agree. It's hard to understand old english.
But some of the plays are profound studies of the human condition.
I live within five blocks of one of the best shakespeare companies and theaters in the US.

Cool, you have tempted me to throw in my chips to the royal shakespeare society one weekend and give him another go.
What's your favourite? Macbeth?
From what I understand it's not just that it's old english, the plays were quite difficult for most at the time they were being shown and only had a relatively small following for a long while.

And regarding plays:
Shakespeare seems more poetry than what we think of as "modern" theater. (veiled occult poetry, I've even heard one theory saying.) Though it is, of course, prototypical theater.
This type of film, the "single scene" where it is primarily composed of dialogue (as we see more often in theater than film) seems ridiculously hard to pull off.
Case in point-- the recently released film "Buried" with Ryan Renolds is an absolute, valueless, sad piece of shit, and by the time I was done I wanted that part of my life back.
This film made me feel nothing like that.
Also, I watched using headphones, so perhaps it was easier to notice, but the sound effects/score to this was done pretty well also. I think it really helped to drive the mood in certain points.
As a film, overall, I think they did a fair job-- but primarily it's the engaging dialogue that makes you want to stick around.
