WBS looking non-hydrated..
    #13993980 - 02/20/11 02:19 AM (12 years, 11 months ago)

I've done several jars up to this point, washing them, PCing them, etc, and never ran into this problem, or what seems to be a problem, but here goes..

My WBS has been PC'd and is not looking hydrated inside the jars.  It shakes around in there like I just poured it out of the bag, and I am puzzled why.  I am used to it being slightly moist in there, and clumping to the sides, so, as I am waiting for the spores to take over, it has me second guessing if it's going to work, since it looks like dry WBS in there, and I can't figure out why.  Anyone ran into this problem?

Did you take the rocker off of the PC to relieve pressure after cooking  ? or let it cool down slowly over night? If you depressurized the PC by taking off the rocker it dries out your grains so there's your problem. Especially in the winter then the ambient RH is low outside the PC. It sucks all the water right out of the grains. :nonono:

nope, i left it on.

when i let the PC build pressure, i take that thing off for like 5 min, then put it on and left it on until the process was complete, then let it cool down for a few hours, took the lid off..and THOUGHT i was done.

should i assume that these grains and spores are wasted as of now?

No, If you PC'd and then inoculated you should wait it out. Low likelihood but possible

You shill inoculated them ?

Just be patient. If you used sterile technique those spores are going to try and germinate.

Okay, I wasn't sure if them being fully hydrated was absolutely essential to fruiting.

Well, Fruiting is another chapter all together. You have to spawn that WBS to a bulk substrate first.
