Commander Riker, Q and god-like powers * 1
    #13990822 - 02/19/11 04:17 PM (12 years, 11 months ago)

Was watching an early SNG episode wherein Commander Will Riker was given the Power of The Q - essentially making him a demi-god.

At the end of moralizing episode, Picard and the other staff applauded Riker for rejecting such powers.

Seemed hokey to me in that I doubt that ANYONE would turn down an offer of immortality and the ability to create anything you wished with a mere thought.

Would you?

No way I would've turned those powers down.

But that show had the philosophy of how one must earn/learn their own so they don't interfere with their own progress. The PRIME DIRECTIVE! And no way Riker was gunna disobey the PRIME DIRECTIVE.

Loved that show.

It seems the idea parallels powers (siddhis) promised to yogis, which are to be rejected in favor of the great power of Self-Realization, which would render petty powers over worldly matters not worth pursuing. In Zen, these powers are called Makyo, and are rejected because they reinforce the illusory nature of existence. Self-Realization establishes an abiding condition of fulfillment, according to report, that renders the desires of the embodied ego as irrelevant. If one already is fulfilled, it doesn't make sense to pursue the usual means to fulfillment (e.g., sex, social status and financial power). But the danger of inflating an average, (or, in Riker's case) an above-average ego is usually too much. Few would grok that without the wisdom and vision to understand the domino-effect of exerting God-like powers, lesser men would quickly go mad with power. 'Absolute power corrupts absolutely.'

In zen and yoga stories the powers/New York Siddhi are rejected - but mainly because they do not exist.

"Mainly," for you, does not mean impossible for me. I have experienced telepathy - "ring-like-a-bell-in-the-head-telepathy" (Gertrude Schmeidler's term) - on 6 occasions. Three times I was on acid, three times I was not, but I was living a Yoga paradigm throughout. So, whereas I have no intention of securing your trust, I remain entirely convinced of telepathy and other Psi functions. My doubts include bi-location, psychokinesis, and of course, physical levitation. Our individual horizon of what is possible depends upon our individual experiences. For me, gnosis precedes faith, and my faith in what is possible stands upon the experiences that I have had.
Perhaps you simply have little or no ability to trust the testimonies of others in matters that are non-physical (Ken Wilber's Upper Left Quadrant). Perhaps you are simply mired in the Upper Right Quadrant. All Quadrants, All Levels (AQAL) is a brilliant multidimensional and hence comprehensive model of perception. Consider expanding your own perception by checking it out.

I don't doubt you believe you had telepathy.

But out of the trillions of thoughts you have had, you had 6 hits. So how many misses does that make?

Read where Huston was on psilocybin and was 100% certain he had a telepathic link with another tripper - until he asked the other person after they were sober. Nothing. Huston realized he was just tripping and projecting.

Until it can be done under controlled circumstance it is impossible to say if there were not other cues or a misreading of the situation or merely a disregarding of the numerous untold misses (selection bias).

No. When I came to recognize the experience, which is a subtle thing to describe because when we 'hear,' we simultaneously have sensations in our ears. When these events occurred, only then did I notice the absence of corresponding otic sensation. Then, on two occasions - once with a college roommate and once with a hometown friend - I repeated the words that I had 'heard' telepathically, and in both instances, they were horrified! On both of those occasions, their reactions were jaw-dropping, eye-opening fear/horror. With my roommate, we were walking into someone's dorm whom we had just met. My roommate Tomas was ahead of me, and I thought it odd when I 'heard' "I want to get out of here," I mean, it sounded rude but also an all-too-honest vocalization that Tomas was uncomfortable. When I then responded with, "What do you mean you want to get out of here?" that was when he turned in horror to say, "I didn't say that...I just thought that!" It was after that second event that I noticed the difference in hearing via the usual sensory organ, and the telepathic effect.

This was one experience. I consider myself to be as accurate a phenomenologist as any. But because your model of Reality is utterly trapped in materialism, and your understanding lacking other modes of apperception, all you are able to do is be hopelessly reductionistic about such occasions. All of my experiences were spontaneous, and as my ego had and has no control over processes like these, applying the scientific method is just not going to be possible. That methodology works in the Upper Right Quadrant with '"Its," but it does not work in the Upper Left Quadrant of 'I' - subjective experience. It is preposterous to reduce subjective human experience to a model that claims that consciousness does not exist, or that feeling states are quantifiable. I am aware of other models of consciousness which makes Psi functions matter-of-fact. Some of those are quite old in fact. Hopefully you'll experience something with sufficient intensity that you will not be able to honestly reject it, and have to expand your understanding with a model that includes things you've only heard or read about.

So in your whole life you've never told a lie. (even to yourself) Well now you can claim title to the first perfect human on earth.  It's a pleasure to make your acquaintance. I'm going to take things in the Mystery forum a little more seriously from now on.:satansmoking:

I don't constantly pass myself off as some sort of expert on things magical when in fact I'm totally full of shit and refuse to demonstrate things I claim to have first hand evidence for. Not even when someone who lives not 30 minutes away asks repeatedly for a simple demonstration and gets ignored instead.

That's the difference.

That's really quite a small difference in the big picture even if you are correct.  And nobody is totally fos.

I'm not a big believer in all that myself as you know but I've had several very enjoyable phone conversations with him find him to be quite kind and generous and entertaining in his way.  I guess I'm getting soft in my old age.:satansmoking:

If a man could no longer get hard, it certainly might cause stress and increased heart rate.

Just sayin'...

Look, you already made babies so nature doesn't care about you any more.

She has never yet caught me so won't relax my sex drive until I comply.

I can still make babies, nature keeps compelling me to spread my seed.  Fortunately, I have a will of iron (and a fear of disease).
