LME syrup instead of powder?
    #13989997 - 02/19/11 01:20 PM (12 years, 11 months ago)

figured I'd take a stab at LC's this weekend. I'm basically just mixing water and LME (light malt extract) at a 4% ratio. went to the home brew store and found LME and bought some. got home, and it's the SYRUP kind, not powder... will this still work? I mixed in approx 30g of it with 2000ml water (about 3% because it's sooo thick) while making a mess. boiled it until it was dissolved. and split it up between 4 pint jars (500ml each...)

I'm warming up the PC right now, will this work?

Will do. Pc just hit 15 psi. I'll take it off the stove in 15 minutes and let it cool. Then pics.

alright so 15 min in the pressure cooker. they come out like so. There's some heavy white sediment that wasn't there before the PC but I've heard that this is ok because it gives the myc something to bind to? or should i filter this and PC one more time? anyways pics below. take a look

also, how long should i let them cool before i 'noc em up?

the syrup would contain some amount of water already, so it will
probably throw your ratios off some, but i think it will still work fine.

gl!

p.s. noc em up once they are cool to the touch.

from what i gather the sediment is'nt a big deal, it's just crystalized sugars posibly from
pcing too hot/long. it makes it harder to spot contams, but i don't believe it will hurt anything.

yeah it looks a bit cloudy.  If you cant see through it, it will be extremely hard to identify growth.

I also wouldn't recommend starting LC with spores.  It's very hard to do.  I have a flowhood and I still get bacterial contams 60% of the time when starting from spores.  I inoculate with colonized agar or grain LC.
