Wearing Keffiyeh's for fashion

How do you guys feel about this? So far, every single person I have asked that was wearing a keffiyeh had no idea what it symbolizes. Though we don't live in an Arab nation, so the culture associated with the piece of clothing is not as emphasized, you cannot disassociate the strong political implications such a piece of clothing caries.
I think they look cool, but I wouldn't wear one because of the political attachment.

i think they're pretty cool. being half arab it'd feel pretty right for me with one on. cant comment much on the political attachment though, as i'm not Palestinian.

I had no idea that thing had a name other than a scarf, or that it had any sort of political symbolism. I'd wear one if someone gave it to me, and it was cold out.
I don't give a shit what people half way across the world think it symbolizes.

That's why I made this thread. I was curious to whether or not you guys thought the political ties held any significance. I think if you were more privy to the political situation, you would have a stronger opinion about it.
And yes, most people in North America just call them scarves. Whenever I tell people: "Nice Keffiyeh" I tend to get a look of confusion.

Yup i have no idea of the political meaning of this garment but it has a stricking resemblence to the old queer style neckerchief

So if i seen someone wearing the thing from your picture i would have just thought they were making a sexual orientation fashion statement than a political message

Wow, so I had no idea what you were talking about at first, but apparently there is a whole "code" to the community of homosexuals wearing handkerchiefs: http://alt.xmission.com/~trevin/hanky.html

I was not aware of the code but you do see a lot of people who look very homosexual wearing them in what they call the "Pink Triangle" area of my city.
These are the only type of people i have seen wearing them, kind of defeats any political message any wearer would be trying to get across in UK, i suppose once the political message carrier has knocked back the offers of a blowjob in the toilets he may get to explain "Ohhh im not gay it is being worn as part of a political statement" and maybe if the blowjob offerer thinks he may be able to turn the wearer he may listen to the political message for a while.

Well Rabid we both learnt something today
I learn what a Keffiyeh was, this was why i first looked in your post the word keffiyeh and what idiot part of some new fashion it was part of.
And you learnt
That everyone who it was not a political statement for thought it was part of homosexual fashion and that the wearers were just loud, proud and available.
BTW your link to the code did not work

You never said what the political statement was. I'm curious now.
And they seem to be worn by a lot of hipsters/gays downtown and in the "Gayborhood"

i remember watching arab new channels with my dad when i was little. they dont censor like the U.S. does. watching isreal soldiers totally fuck shit up. lots of wounded men and children. a video that particularly stuck with me was of distraught kids throwing rocks at isreal's tanks as they passed by. i could see the anguish in their eyes. furious that their homes were being destroyed, even further troubled by the fact they could do nothing to stop it. needless suffering

Think maybe you should spread the word that the Kellifeh's message is not clear and is getting confused with a louder slightly more extrovert message.
I remember seeing the news from the West Bank all through the 80's and 90's growing up, looked like some miserable shit

I don't support Palestine or Isreal. I think both sides are to blame.
I could see the appeal of supporting the underdog though. Like being a rebel. I guess most people don't have that thought process though when they buy one. They just think it looks cool.

Actually the conflict has been going on for over 100 years, though I'm not sure when the keffiyeh became associated with the Palestinian side. Israelis actually called themselves Palestinians back in the early 1900's
by the way, a keffiyeh is not a scarf.
These are all keffiyehs:

Today, Red and White Keffiyehs actually symbolize Hamas (a Palestinian "party"), though back in the day they were associated with Jordanians.
*Edit: The color differentiation is now more indicative of political faction amongst residing Palestinian party's. Keffiyehs have become a thing of Palestine.
