That's the easy part, lol. Matching positive to positive etc. If there are 3 wires coming from the fan ignore one of them, try again. Some fans have a speed control wire that you don't need to use.

Yea i did end up figuring out what the problem was. The fans no good which blows. I ended up wiring it up to the smaller fan from inside the same pc and it worked just fine. I'm gonna try and super glue the magnet to the blades because if I stick it to the center the magnetic force is to much and stops the fan all together. If anything I might have to just go buy the fan which sux but I'm gonna try to get this smaller one to work first.

Try putting it on the other side of the fan, my magnet doesn't interfere with the motor operation for some reason. Also before you superglue it, get it positioned properly on the fan so that it'll reliably spin whatever you're using for a stir bar.
You'll want a glass vessel for your LC that has a perfectly flat bottom. Don't try to wing it with a quart jar, you'll just get pissed, trust me. Some people with proper stir bars don't have a problem with this, but the flatter the bottom of your LC jar, the better.

Thanks, I've been messing with it and I can't do it from the other side. I'm gonna try to glue it to the blades but with that being a smaller fan there isn't much room to play with cause its probably gonna be close to hitting the sides. If worse comes to worse ill go to this little computer repair shop that i always go to for everything i need. The owners a pretty cool guy.
I'm gonna wait til tomarro and just pick up some superglue then because I have some other stuff I need to grab anyways. If it fails i'll just buy another fan. I'll probably end up buying a nicer box and power control in a few weeks but first I just want something that works because I do have 2 masters colonizing using LME and am gonna be knocking up workers soon.
I do have marbles in the masters but its hard to agitate it that way. That's how I came to realize having a magnetic stirrer is gonna be very beneficial.

You can use two of these instead of HD magnets http://www.officeplayground.com/Buzz-Magnets-P169.aspx to make one of these like I made, works great at slower speeds to stir, and great at medium speed to chop but it rattles if you try to make it go full on tornado, which you don't need to do anyway.

Those magnets work great in any jar the trick is getting them the right distance apart, HD magnets I have heard do not do very well for low speed stirring but these work great for that. The only problem is that they are made of hematite which contains iron so if left for too long (months) in liquid they will eventually rust. They spin very easily due to their football shape they are very strong magnets and they attach to each other just like in the pic on the website. Also if you want a good deal on a fan this is the best I have found, unless your little comp shop can do better.

I'm sure you could find the charger somewhere else if you searched the net I'm sure I was just showing you what I used, I think mine came from big lots for like $3. If you did use a HD magnet(that are harder to get balanced because of the shape) it would make a much more powerful stir but not work as good for a slower stir but I don't really think you need that powerful of a stir unless you want to chop the myc in like 30 seconds. The set up I have I think would chop it up in a few hours though I have not tested it. So if you want slow to medium speed stir and chop then my invention should work, if you want a tornado to beat the hell out of the myc then a stronger magnet in the fan should be used. I am really not at all experienced in this but the guy I got the idea from said that the vortex that mine creates should chop up the myc fine enough to go into the syringe looking at the vortex it makes.
Maybe a hybrid of my setup could be made to work at any speed by using a more powerful magnet on the fan and one of the buzz magnets in the jar. The thing I liked about the buzz magnet is that they spin very easily at slow speeds because of their shape.

Just search Universal AC/DC adapter adjustable voltage, or I found one here thats $9 kinda pricey if you ask me http://www.sfcable.com/2150-SF-16%20.html?utm_medium=shoppingengine&utm_source=nextag or your neighborhood computer or electronics store most likely has one, just make sure it has a switch to change the voltage so you can control the speed of the fan.

I think I'm gonna have to go buy the special screwdriver for these screws, its fine not a big deal. I just hate fucking hastling with shit like this when I don't have the right tools.

When I got to those screws I pryed on the area around them with a big screwdriver till the metal they were screwed into broke, only took a minute.

The pieces of metal on each side are the magnets, there are always two of them as far as I know, they are glued to that piece of metal in the middle.A pair of pliers should break the glue but might chip the edge of the magnet, I chipped mine which I never used.

You don't need a special power supply, just get a rheostat that you can wire in to dial in the speed. It's much cheaper and easy to find at electronics stores.

Hey team,
I was inspired to start one this evening also.
I have a torq somewhere, but rather than look for it, I just attached my cobalt steel drill bit and voila.
My magnet was in two pieces, firmly attached to the same side of a piece of metal. What is odd, and I mean really odd, is that there is little or no magnetic attraction to ferrous metals on the "piece of metal side". Whereas there is a ton on the magnet side. These must be the "neodymium" magnets they sell as novelties online. I have some and they are wicked small and strong.
I am sure that this is intended to keep the magnet from interfering with the operation of the drive and I suppose benefits me by keeping the magnet from bothering the fan coils.
I did find it humorous, trying to find the center of mass of my magnet... while is was spinning wildly off the fan.
I used some paste to stick it on while I position it by trial and error. I did OK. Not perfect, but I think that the fan will live.
I need to scrounge up some washers. I am on a mission to do this with what I have in the house right now.
Now, I will need to start some LCs! ;0)
Take care,
JD

Here is what I did using computer parts and a small plastic bucket.

Take the computer fan glue the hard disk magnets to the center and fit this inside a plastic container. Here I used an old 12V adapter to power the fan.

Throw the lid on with a few holes in the top and you have a working stir plate.
I used old screws for stir bars. Works like a charm.

Oh, forgot to mention also that I clipped all of the fan blades off of my fan. I see everyone leaving them on and it's confusing to me. I don't need to move air, I need to spin a magnet.

It's not packaged very well internally but I can take pictures if you want.
I was wondering if you would take some pictures of the in side of the box so I can see how you wired it all together? Did you buy all the parts from Radio shack? What is the dial knob for? Does that hook up to the rheostat? Thanks for taking the time.
