what are your thoughts on wireless routers? do they take away speed from your computer? right now im plugging straight in using an ethernet wire, but i might have to get a wireless router.

they are awesome if you dont put that many walls between them and your laptop or computer.
whenever im visiting my mom i have the floor, and at least 3 walls to go through before the internet gets to my laptop in the guest room. it really slows shit down.
but if i chill with my laptop downstairs in the living room its fine.

well im going to have to use one for my desktop.
i did go to walmart the other day and checked out what they had, but it seemed liked they were trying to put out all kinds of crap.
they had surfer, gamer, hardcore... i mean does all that really matter? i would hate to lose any potential THE BEAST has to offer.

You're definately going to loose frames if you play intensive online games. Direct wire connection is obviously better than having to transcode that data into a wireless signal and hope the vibrations make it through the walls.

Like i said, if you dont want to loose any internet speed then ethernet is the only way.
You dont need to have the router in the same room, just get a long 50foot+ ethernet cable and hook it up.

this is going off topic, but ive made too many threads about computers in the past couple days so i will ask in here.
im about to burn ubuntu using imgburn and i would like to set it up on THE BEAST using dual boot. is there anything special i need to do? im going to do a little searching on google, but to be honest... my eyes are a little tired. (im being lazy) thanks

Ok, well a lot of the info being handed out is half-assed...
Wireless routers are GREAT for EVERYTHING minus streaming! The wireless N routers are pushing 200+mbps (12X wireless g speeds are claimed)
Now think about how fast your internet is... the fastest speeds you can pay for are only hitting 60mbps right now. Thats it. you wont lose any packets compared to wired connection.
Wired speeds, especialy at the gigabit speeds are blazing fast for network transfers and streaming. Now if you only have one or 2 laptops or PC's on your home network, and you dont transfer or stream (normally due to not knowing how), than a wireless G is even fine. It wont affect your download speeds either!
Back before G routers came out and just "b" technology was used, wireless was VERY unstable! Over the last couple years, G and N technology has gotten things to where wireless should be.
Go ahead and get a wireless setup, you'll be much happier being able to move around the house.

Fantastic! Get one that's compatible with DDWRT firmware if at all possible! It really unlocks a lot of features on your router, and makes it way more stable!

This has been my experience.
My router is about 50 ft away and goes through 3 walls (one used to be an exterior wall so it's pretty thick).
I still pull 20mbps down. It's what my ISP advertises. It appears I have no loss of speed at all.

I get a huge drop through one stucco wall at 20 ft from the router. It's a Motorola router, and apparently it sucks.

we used to leech our internet from a coffee place a few years ago that was back when i used to play css competitively and i definitely had a higher ping..
now we have a dlink router the one with three antennas. It passes through a few walls. i usually use it in my van in the garage and it kicks ass...
