Spores->LC, not recommended.

Grain LC is great. And you can use it to start regular LC.

Why is spores to LC not a good idea?

My last grow I sterlized my casing instead of only pasteurizing and all my trays ended up with trich after casing. Trich started on the casing layer. There were no problems untill then. Never had a problem when I've pasteurized it. I'm guessing the fact that it's sterile opens it up to easier contamination? Anyway seen you were gonna sterilize your casing, maybe that isn't what caused my problem but thought I would mention it. GL :mushroom2:

One quick question, the rye grains and 50/50 casing seem appropriate for all three species correct?  I've done a lot of reading and while I may not be optimal without dung for pans, etc, I think I can find some results with this, and I really don't need high volume so that's all I need.

I just wanted to put question back out there.  I don't actually need hpoo to get fruits from Pans or Mex, correct?

no

what did you use to case? im assuming you used 5050? like, coir/verm or peat/verm? switch to straight verm, and you wont see trich.. at least i dont.. i never saw trich on my casing or even in my FC ever again after taking the nutritious stuff out of the casing layer..  just a suggestion

For the first attempts i can only suggest you to make a sub with Coir 80%, Verm 18% and Gypsum 2%.
This mix is nearly "fail save"
Pretty much resistant to contams!!

Right I used 50/50 verm/peat. I've always gotten great results. I haven't tried just straight verm though. I don't have a problem using the 50/50,it was only this one time when I sterilized instead of pasteurizing. I did the sterilization instead just because it seemed a bit faster.

well, with the verm, you can just sterilize.. no prob..

the cool thing about 5050, is it will change color, indicating the need to mist for moisture..

buuuutttt, a TRUE casing layer is non-nutritious, and coir or peat have yummies that things like trich, in particular, loooovee to live on..

you can sterilize the verm in a canning jar, just like you would prepare anything in a jar.. let it cool, then spread over the top, just like any other casing..

depending on your FC, you would probably only need to mist once per day after the second day.. thats how it was in my martha, but your misting needs will vary with natural climate and FC design..

i stopped using 5050 and never looked back.. lol.. it can take some time to know when its time to mist..

one way to judge is to maybe put a small tray with just some casing in there, and run everything like you would for fruiting, testing the verm once or twice per day, checking for moisture content, and misting when needed.. when you squeeze the verm in your fingers, it should baaarely let a drop out.. maybe a full drop.. you want it moist, but not wet.. its not hard though..

sterile technique is just as important, if not more important than anything else.. keep that in mind when working inside of your FC..
