Bonding metal to metal
    #13978887 - 02/17/11 01:25 PM (13 years, 15 days ago)

My buddy is trying to attach a silencer mount to his gun. He is afraid a brazing torch will fuck up the gun.

Should he solder with a soldering iron? Solder with a brazing torch? Use some kind of epoxy?

It has to stay on really good - it's the only thing that keeps the silencer lined up. More play = bigger hole / higher chance of the bullet scraping.

Silencers are illegal in most places.  Be careful that your friend isn't breaking the law.  They don't have a lot of sympathy for that type of crime.  Sorry, not much help for your question.

That it would.  Uneven heating can really mess with the properties and strength of steel

a threaded barrel and silencer would be the proper way to do it but it sounds
like you guys are using something like a lawn mower muffler and as seuss
said, what you're doing is most likely a violation of several federal laws

You guys know that growing mushrooms and doing drugs is also in violation of the law, right? :P Besides, it's his idea, I don't even have a gun. Stupid part is that he isn't silencing it so he can go be an assassin, he's silencing it so he can target shoot without pissing off his neighbors (some counties, the government actually requires silencers)

It turns out that threading a gun barrel is kind of hard and requires equipment. What is much easier is taking an already threaded piece of pipe and attaching it OVER the barrel.

Silver solder and a brazing torch worked: http://tinypic.com/r/2caiv5/7

Holds DAMN good, fires the way it should, even with the pipe screwed on.

get a better coupling at least. Find out what grade the steel of the barrel is compared to the shitty steel home depot pipe is made from before you die. Half assed highly illegal mods to a gun that risky is just not worth it. I have done a lot of risky stupid shit but would not walk down that road. that gun barrel may be in the range of 15k psi under fire far exceeding the 150psi rating of the pipe.

> You guys know that growing mushrooms and doing drugs is also in violation of the law, right?

Not every type of mushroom is illegal to grow.  Not every location makes it illegal to grow some types of mushrooms.  I didn't assume where you lived... just asked that you be careful and check the local laws to ensure that you are not doing something that is going to get you in trouble.  I tell the same thing to people that are planning to grow mushrooms that are illegal in most countries.  Knowledge is power, but breaking the law is stupid.

> Besides, it's his idea, I don't even have a gun

That only makes you part of a conspiracy, not indemnified from the crime.

Not an option if you have a felony.

Also, the pipe is thick galvanized steel AND about double the diameter of the gun barrel. The gas has already expanded by the time it's entered the pipe - there is no way it could really damage it. Besides, the pipe is going to be cut back and ported when the silencer is added.

Still, thanks for your concern.

That was great! :lolz0rz:

But I agree with the guy above that said the gun might blow up and cause you to loose some sort of bodily function. Like seeing out of your right eye for example.

Simplistically thought perhaps but..

The handling properties of the pistol are going to be way off because that piece of pipe is attached to it, so why doesnt he just switch to a CO2 powered BB pistol?

If he has the cojones to risk 10 years in jail or a trip to the ER for a DIY silenced gun, shouldnt he be able to handle the testosterone dip that comes with just doing the smart responsible thing and switching to .177 BB ?

That pistol + pipe contraption will at best handle like a completely different gun. Most pistol shooting is done <50ft and .177 BB is perfect for that.

This. Federal law requires a tax stamp for a silencer. Mega jail otherwise. Ask him if it's worth another felony. The very fact that he possesses the gun is a BIG no-no, couple that with a silencer, and the prosecution will nail him to the fucking wall, and possibly put him away for good.

Besides, on most guns the silencer doesn't make it THAT much quieter. Unless it's a .22, your neighbors will still probably hear it.

The beauty of locking people up for firearms "crimes" that have nothing to do with harming other people?

Anyway, Zelse the neighbors would definitely still be able to hear it but it'll sound more like someone hammering on some project outside than the loud report that usually accompanies a handgun being fired.

Also, wtf are you talking about welding a silencer to a firearm man?  That makes it unusably unsafe.  You would absolutely have to have it threaded and then interlock the threads in order to form a strong and reliable enough bond.

The power of the screw thread.

tig welder it does not use as much voltage as an arc or mig.

it therefore does not create as much heat and will less likely
warp the barrel.

tig welds are not as deep as other welds.

Fuck that, if he lives in the county i say he should bust a few hundred rounds a day like a good ole boy.

I do it, well only a few times a month, and the cops get called everytime, and its a good family friend everytime.

It goes like this

Yall shootn it up again?

Sure am.

Whatchya shootn at?

Everything.

Sounds good, nice backdrop

If he isn't doing anything illegal he has nothing to fear, no need for a silencer, tell the neighbors to fuck themselves.
