Is there a way for 2 PCs in different households to be on the same LAN?

So basically I have a friend that lives a ways away, and we want to play a couple games together. So is there a way that he can get on my network?

Create a VPN between the two LANS over the WAN.

Hahah! Yeah I wouldn't even know where to begin. I'm not too tech savvy. Some extensive searching on google, and finally figuring out how to word my question, "How to create a LAN over the internet", and I got some good info. Went with a free program called Hamachi. Thanks for the replies!

Edit: Also OpenVPN or the one built into windows.
Double edit: D'oh!! I skimmed your last message and didn't see that you're using Hamachi..

To change your router setting you prob will have to type in 192.168.0.1 into your web browser. That is basic default, but yours might have a different number.
What I would do would be tolimit all IP except for the specified ones. Then put in the IP of each workstation. The one you are accessing the setting through should be added by default, then you will need to add the next sequential number as well.
So if the default computer is set to 192.168.1.1 the next one that will be assigned will be 192.168.1.2 (your brothers)
If it is wireless you will want to set up the security settings and set a password which will use WPA2-PSK security. WPA works but it is a bit easier to crack.
You may also consider adding the VP settings as mentioned above.
You will need the ports however, but you already have the IP's.

Also, find the default setting button , and don't be afraid to play around with it a bit. If it stops working you can restore factory defaults or manually reset with a small reset button on the physical router. It should be slightly ingrained and small, and labeled reset.

VPNs are great! I started using OpenVPN in highschool, since then I have built a network that I run based in three different towns, and wherever I take my laptop, as long as I have internet access, I have an encrypted line of communication straight through my own network. Great for checking my banking information from other people's houses without having to worry about security, or browsing the shroomery without strangers listening in on your connection

Ive been trying to get VPN working in Windows 7, but have issues. When working, I should be able to map a network drive over the internet right? When I connect with my client computer, I lose internet access and cannot find or map any external drive. I have been looking for solutions online, but cant find much at all... Bleh!

Did you share the drive? ^.^
Make sure file sharing is turned on.
You also may need to make an exception in your firewall.

> When I connect with my client computer, I lose internet access
I'm not sure if I am reading this correctly or not, but in general, when you set up a VPN, you no longer have a router to the internet. Site A can talk to site B, but neither site A or site B can connect to any computer that is not on the VPN (such as a web site on the internet). This is intentional to protect the VPN from intrusion (i.e. internet traffic coming from site B's internet connection into site A's network, skipping site A's firewall). There are usually ways around it, (such as adding a route for non-vpn traffic) but you have to enable them. They are seldom activated by default.

Exactly. As a result, the hordes of people using VPN access to log in to the network at work from home or from hotel rooms don't realize that when they browse the internet (e.g. for viewing porn, ordering illicit substances or seducing little kids) while connected to the VPN, all that internet traffic runs through the VPN and hence the servers at work.

Hamachi was a little easier than running 70 miles of ethernet cable to his house.
