If you can keep stuff down you could try pedialyte. just a few TBS at a time... slowly. if not chewing ice can help hydrate you. BRAT diet for gastro recovery = bread, rice, applesauce, tea. Avoid sugar and peptobismo. Pepto has asprin in it so its a no no. Yogurt and miso for probiotics.
If you get too dehydrated, can you grab a book and go to a doctor? They might give you an IV of 2 liters of water and some potassium or other elecrolytes? Hope you feel better!

I hope you feel better soon Evil. That's not cool at all.
I guess it's a good lesson to take it very easy when trying new medicinal substances.

Thanks for the advice aris,
It has been about 36 hours since I had the tea and I still feel off.
Last night I took a gravol around 8 and was passed out asleep by 10 with no stomach rolling. When I woke up this morning I still felt a little off but just slightly. Today the diarrhea has started and I am trying to keep hydrated with ice chips and sips of water. The thought of eating still makes me feel sick, so I plan to just intake fluids until I feel I can eat.
Im not sure that this was an allergic reaction, or what is going on for that matter. Could be I am not used to the feeling of my body being cleansed. Either way I do not think reishi is for me.
I do not blame the mushroom(A hard thing to do) and I have learned a valuable lesson first hand. ALWAYS approach new mushrooms with caution and take a small dose to start with. I COULD NOT IMAGINE what this experience would have been like if I took the whole 5 gram dosage.
In the past I have been hyper sensitive to a lot of things, and it appears that mushrooms will be no different. I am disappointed that It has effected me this way.
Thanks for the kind words and wishes for me to get well, I appreciate it guys.
EDIT: I had to add that before drinking the tea over 36 hours ago I had about 5-6 bong loads of potent cannabis(normal Saturday night). It is also weird that last night the symptoms were aggravated and brought back by smoking cannabis. I plan to stop smoking over the next few days just to avoid a repeat of last night. Very odd interaction tho.

Sorry you had problems with the reishi, hope you feel better soon. I can imagine that you feel let down after the anticipation during the grow. If you enjoy growing it you maybe could trade it. I have the culture sitting in the fridge and have yet to grow it out and try it myself.

I found it interesting that you would consider that the effects were even remotely beneficial. I quit smoking last year (hand rolled Bugler tobacco) and thought I was going to die - serious respiratory infection. I'm not fully aware of the advantages of taking reishi, and if they outweigh the risks. When I read what you posted my first thought was to suggest that you start taking even lower amounts and work up to the recommended dosage, but then I realized that it is possible that your body may never adjust and that it doesn't need to. Like you said, it may not be for you.
I'm curious if there is documentation where someone forced it upon themselves with continued negative effects and what they were.
Best wishes - get well

That's good to hear. Your experience makes me cautious about my current and first Reishi grow that is happening at the moment. I've experienced so called cleansing effects in the past from things like fasting but never anything like what you've been through.
Is anyone aware of this happening to anyone else who tried Reishi?

You should boil reishi for at least two hours. I'm not sure if that's what caused the reaction or not, but the medicine was definitely not extracted in ten minutes, although I suspect the bitterness was. RR

Good point RR. I wonder if it's possible that the problems came from something that was on the reishi rather than from what is in the reishi?

anyone know how long it takes boiling to prevent food poisoning? it sounds a little bit like that, but then allergies as well as smoking was mentioned so there may be to many factors involved here to come to a reasonable conclusion

EvilMushroom666 said: UPDATE:
Last night I tried my first cup of reishi tea by myself and lets just say I have had an adverse reaction.
I steeped around 2.5 grams of reishi in boiling water for 5-10 minutes before adding a tea bag and ingesting.
15-20 minutes later I started to feel a slight tingle in my arms and under my skin all over my body and an uneasiness started to form in my stomach. I started to feel really uneasy and my stomach started to do flips. I ended up puking 5 separate times and spent most of the night feeling terrible and not myself. I ended up falling asleep and woke up this morning feeling fine.
I went about my day and was fine until I ate some lunch. About 20 minutes after eating lunch I started to feel sick again and the feelings of uneasiness and flushing started again. I ended up puking up my lunch and over the last few hours have dealt with feeling off.
I am just now starting to feel better and the sensations of unease and tingling have started to go away, although I do not plan to eat anything else today in hopes that whatever is still in my system is flushed away.
Needless to say this was all not a pleasant experience and I do not plan to ingest reishi again.
Side note: I have in the past been hyper sensitive to many medications both natural and otherwise and have severe allergic reactions to fungal based anti-biotics. I am not surprised at my reactions to reishi and I am glad that I choose a smaller dose for my first tea.
This just goes to show once again that we are all different and you should always approach ingesting a new mushroom with caution.
Hey EM,
I have been remiss not to find this sooner.
I am so very sorry to read this bro.
I will (hopefully) do this experiment myself and will report. (my first Retch-i is fruiting in the tub...or so I hope)
I am happy to see that you are on the mend!
Take care,
JD
P.S. How about Stropharia next...or Lion's Mane...let me know.

Damn Evil, wtf I think someone put something in you weed. Don't give up on Reishi(unless that is all you had). I make Reishi in large batches because it takes all day. I don't know the measurements anymore because I do the same thing every time. I fill my grinder twice with reishi and put 10 quarts of water in a large pot and boil it down about half way then add 1quart vodka or any strong liquor(moonshine ) then boil some more. The end result is 4 quarts of nasty tasting reishi. I add 1 shot glass full to my morning coffee and it is fine.
Point is make it properly and test a small amount before you toss all your reishi.

Would you say that you boil it for over 2 hours, then? I would guess boiling out 5 quarts of the water would take longer than two hours, but I'm not sure.
Anyway, I'm gonna read up on making reishi tea now.
There's this Asian supermarket that I go to, and they sell a tea with reishi in it. Didn't know it needed to be boiled for so long. No wonder it had no effect on me.
Well, the flavor did cause me to make this face:
Then I was like.
But I wanted to be like.
Now I know - gotta boil the piss out of it.

I read up a bit before I made the tea and I knew that it would take longer then 10 minutes to get the medicine out. This was just a small test run to see what it tasted like and I figured that perhaps some of the medicine would get extracted out.
It did taste bitter (was slightly masked my the tea) and made my mouth feel dry after ingesting it. I honestly do not know what the hell happened.
CH: The cannabis was the same as always, and the girlfriend has been smoking it all weekend with no ill effects.
I have a pre existing hyper sensitivity to most medications. Usually when taking a medicine for the first time my doctor gives me 1/10th to 1/16th of the recommended dose to start as we have both learned over the years that sometimes minuscule amounts is what I need for the beneficial effects, anymore then that and I get all the side effects.
I can honestly say I will not be giving reishi another try anytime soon. I do not want to risk going through all this again as it was a very uncomfortable 48 hours. I plan to give the rest of my reishi away perhaps to friends, perhaps to fellow Shroomerites. I will more then likely continue to grow it, but there are plenty of other medicinal mushrooms out there for me to try, hopefully with better effects.
