Reishi - Round Two! (Last Picture Update)

2 Months ago I started some reishi projects. I started with two pasteurized sawdust bags, and later went on to make two mono tubs, 15L and 55L. Things did not go well despite me documenting almost every day of the grow with pictures and short blurbs. You can see that thread here:
https://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Number/13611399/fpart/1/vc/1
A little discouraged I took some time to re-collect my thoughts. I then went on and started another reishi spawn run. Feb 4th was the day I inoculated my second batch of reishi bags. Here they are today:

I spawned 1Qt of wheat berries to each bag and as you can see things are going MUCH better.
I also have 2 more bags of supplemented sawdust(sterilized) that seem promising.
I will keep updated, and here is to hoping that my second run goes a lot smoother

Awesome! Do you have those bags in some kind of fruiting chamber, or just like that? Good luck with your grow!

Fruiting from the bag for now.
I plan to prep my SGFC next week for my first block of shiitake! Has been browning for over two months now, started cold shocking this week and into fruiting next Monday.
I do have a martha but have never been able to dial it in right, so until I have the $$ to build my humidifier and FAE system I have to make due with what I have. Spring being just around the corner I may just look to build an outdoor fruiting area
Time will tell.
Thanks for the support!

That's good to know, I did the same with my reishi blocks, just untied the bag and left it half open, maybe I'll throw one of them in the SG when primordia forms. How long did it take from full colonization to those pins? I have the same strain you sent me, I'm just curious. Outdoor fruiting area is my plan too, you can never really provide perfect conditions indoors, why not just let nature do it's thing!

14 days since inoculation, not bad if you ask me.
The RH in my house right now is very low so I plan to keep the bags closed minus the one daily air exchange to keep RH inside the bag up.
My last bags never really started to pin even after 2 months, so I am already further then last time!

Very nice! Based on this and my experience with Hericium (journal) it seems for you and me, it is sterilization FTW!

These two bags were pasteurized in the same manor as the first 2.
I did 2 more supplemented bags that I did sterilize, not pictured in this post. They got inoculated on the 9th of Feb I believe so should be fruiting within the next week or so.
Ill post pictures, will be interesting to see the difference between pasteurized sawdust blocks, and supplemented sterilized blocks.
The supplement was BRF, I cannot seem to find a supplier of any form of bran in my area, but I am not done looking yet. I need to find a good supplier of bran, as well as a cheap source of rye or wheat for the spring so I can continue my experiments.

Doh. I really need to start reading more thoroughly. I saw the last line about sterilization...and I'm just gonna quit now:)

I found my bran in 25kg sacks at a feed store. Have you tried them?
Glad to see there working out for you man.
Heres a pic of my one and only atm. It was spawned 26-11 and pinned in under two weeks like yours have. Still growing slowly but surely.

I've got two more jars that just hit 100% today. going to g2g them tuesday or wednesday I hope. Going to have to throw them in cold storage. Other wise I wont be able to get them out of that jar with of a jackhammer.

Baseicks, I tend to use small 1/2 pint widemouths for my reishi grain. That or liquid cultures because it is incredible how tough that mycelium can be. I'm pretty sure that we should be building houses from these types of materials. However, I would be scared to live in one. As fast as they grow, I might 'wake up' colonized.

If you need cheap entertainment, try rotating your next antler project 90 degrees each day as they grow. You'll get really cool twists. I had one darn near tie itself in a knot. I thought about manipulating the light to make one do just that on purpose, but never got around to doing it. I'd pay good money to see two antlers tie a square knot. RR

Canning jars are really expensive here. I have to use recycled food jars. I thought about using lc straight into bags with sawdust and rye in them. Might get around to it some day.

I noticed that they follow light. I was keeping them next to my fc that has a light on top. My fc was empty for a well or so and I had the light off.
I noticed that they started to lean towards the light from my aquarium. since them I've kept them in my window to slow the growth. I bet they will keep growing till I cant keel the bag closed.
I've thought about turning it daily once I reassessed that. Might do it with the next batch. turn half everyday and the other half every two days for a comparison :

Base: Wicked looking bag you got going there, hope mine look half as good!
I got back from the weekend and there is a lot of activity with my bags. I will post some pictures a bit later when I get a chance so you can see the massive blobs that are forming.
Also managed to find some wheat bran(Food grade) at the grocery store to play with, looking forward to doing some supplemented shiitake blocks!
The idea of using light to shape the direction of growth with reishi should be fun to play with, might keep the blocks moving every day or so, see what cool shapes I can get going.
