An abort covered in knots (just a pic, thought it was neat)
    #13977430 - 02/17/11 02:53 AM (13 years, 16 days ago)

I was looking over an aging substrate and noticed an abort covered in primordia. Maybe this is common, but I've never seen it before. Neato, I hope they grow

Sorry for the picture quality.

Sure does look like a mess  I think I see bacterial spot on one of the abort caps in that pic alone  Che sarà, sarà.

Anyway, you're looking at what's left of a casing layer after a dunk; so it is peat moss/verm/oystershell. Underneath is rye:coir/vermiculite/spent coffee.

Still the same  Can't say I expect different given that the genetics it's born from is that of an abort.

The only time mushrooms seem to grow well for me is when I leave them alone. They stall when I pick them, they stall when I alter any environmental condition, they stall when I get them wet...

In this case, I dunked it, and it hasn't done anything since. Dunking isn't something I normally do, but I read so much about it that I was seduced. I get sucked into doing all kinds of silly things. Anyway, now the sub is soggy and unhappy :nonono:

The picture looks much worse than it really is. There is some bacterial spot on old rotting abort caps, but the rest of it looks fine (in person). I don't have anything lined up, so there is no incentive to chuck it. I'll put it in the garden after it's composted inside the house  Given that this last flush (below) was #4, it's well on its way.

If it decides to bloom, I'll make sure to post an update.

The biggest caps were about 7cm or 3 inches. Yeah, this strain seems promising, but this is the first time I've grown it out. It was labeled Koh Samui, but in my experience you can rarely trust a name, especially when it comes from a small print from a free spore exchange.

Experience taught me that finding a good 'strain' is hit and miss because there is so much variation and haphazard selection in everyone's lines. A bunch of different ones need to be grown out until something seems to work well in your environment.

I've had some bad luck with strains so far: my GT was large and procuded well but were hollow kinda weak, my EQ produced tiny fruit and lots of aborts, my PE6 wouldn't produce rhyzomorphs or good pinsets and were stiff enough to snap like wood and would do so spontaneously. I could go on, and yet plenty of people love those strains. I'm currently trying to play with different spore lines in an attempt to find something even remotely close to the foot long stems that weigh 190grams which people seem to post so frequently. :mad2:
