Researchers Discover ‘Runner’s High’ May Be Biologically Similar to a Marijuana High
    #13984219 - 02/18/11 11:49 AM (13 years, 15 days ago)

this seems to be old news!
http://www.brobible.com/story/researchers-discover-runners-high-may-be-biologically-similar-to-a-marijuan

Here's a fascinating 4:20 tidbit for you to stick in your pipe and smoke. According to a study, the euphoric feeling triggered by intense cardio exercise has a similar biological effect as consuming cannabis. Researchers have recently discovered the inner workings of the body's endocannabinoid system and how it releases natural opiates (known as cannabinoids) to ease the physical stress of an intense work out. A great post on the New York Times' Phys Ed blog explains why this natural process is similar to smoking up. Continue reading below.

Quote:

In a groundbreaking 2003 experiment, scientists at the Georgia Institute of Technology found that 50 minutes of hard running on a treadmill or riding a stationary bicycle significantly increased blood levels of endocannabinoid molecules in a group of college students. The endocannabinoid system was first mapped some years before that, when scientists set out to determine just how cannabis, a k a marijuana, acts upon the body. They found that a widespread group of receptors, clustered in the brain but also found elsewhere in the body, allow the active ingredient in marijuana to bind to the nervous system and set off reactions that reduce pain and anxiety and produce a floaty, free-form sense of well-being. Even more intriguing, the researchers found that with the right stimuli, the body creates its own cannabinoids (the endocannabinoids). These cannabinoids are composed of molecules known as lipids, which are small enough to cross the blood-brain barrier, so cannabinoids found in the blood after exercise could be affecting the brain.

Since that 2003 study, a flurry of research has been teasing out the role that endocannabinoids play in the body’s reaction to exercise. In some of Dr. Hill’s work, for instance, rats treated with a drug that blocked their endocannabinoid receptors did not experience the increase in new brain cells that usually accompanies running, suggesting that a well-functioning endocannabinoid system may be required for cognitive improvements from exercise.

But perhaps the most telling experiment was published last year by researchers in France who had bred mice with no functioning endocannabinoid receptors. Mice usually love to run, but the genetically modified animals, given free access to running wheels, ran about half as much as usual. Although the full intricacies of the endocannabinoid system’s role in motivating and rewarding exercise is not yet understood, it seems obvious, the researchers say, that the cannabinoid-deprived mice were not getting some necessary internal message. Typically, the endocannabinoid system “is well known to impact onto central reward networks,” the authors write. Without it, exercise seemed to provide less buzz, and the animals didn’t indulge as much.

That's a fascinating topic.
Too bad they didn't mention how safe it is to drive a car after running.

I dont think it's technically correct calling them opiates though... I always thought Anandamide was just known as an endocannabinoid

I've sampled a wide variety of substances in my day; some good, some bad, some really bad. I am also an avid runner. I do a four mile run three times a week.

I have to agree that the "runner's high" that you get after exercising is remarkably similar to that of other substances. I'd even say that the exercise high is a lot like an amphetamine high. Of course the amphetamine high is more intense, but the feel good factor is very much alike.

I've always suspected the endocannabinoids where involved in that feeling.  That's awesome.

These days it wouldn't surprise me if there was a bill to criminalize illicit running

even our children our running, catching this disease known as "runner's high", a chemical that produces similar effects to Marijuana, or "Grass".

This answered some questions for me.I like to go backpacking and of course i always bring some good greens with me.I like to smoke some right after a hard climb up a switchback or mountainside(or at a spot with an awesome view:headbanger:)and i noticed that the high is increased almost threefold.I always chalked the increased headrush up to altitude, but that never explained the increased intensity of the high.Very interesting.
Oh and if you,ve never smoked a blunt at 14,000 feet i highly recommend it.Fucking epic!!!But coming back down can be a near death experience.:fasted:

^^ I doubt it. If you have experienced a true runners high, its way beyond a weed high, extremely euphoric it honestly feels like you just took an amazing drug. I honestly like the feeling more than I like ecstasy and I LOVE MDMA.. its very short though... no longer than 5 or 10 minutes..

Weed? Yeah, its good, but its not even close IME.

LOL dude I've smoked so much weed I've had massive panic attacks, and I've run sixty miles a week with killer workouts, and the rest of it at a pace that most would consider a tame sprint. Ran near a marathon every weekend for training. I've got a pretty good idea with both. :smirk:

Right

and I'm just saying that I doubt you cuz of my personal experience with the matter. Maybe you do, maybe you don't. I don't know, I don't know you. But in my experience, the runners high was on a whole different level and it was just simply bliss. After a long run and racing sprints at the end with friends, sometimes I get on a euphoric plane which I assume is the runners high. I just think its funny someone would say they prefer the cannabis high.

Like said, its just a doubt. It really doesn't matter either way. just throwing my 2cents out there.

I've always enjoyed the runner's high you can get on a treadmill.  Some good music, get into a fast rhythm and just cycle your legs and sorta space out.  Must say this beats a weed high in my opinion, though close comparison.

I'm guessing I have that gene that makes you especially enjoy weed. It's such a euphoric, profound, dynamic high for me.

I only feel that way when my tolerance really low... once I build up a tolerance...the euphoria really dims down

Yeah more than once a day and it's just foggy murky grogginess. But too rarely and it's just overwhelming.

Nah. Even once a day is too much IMO... I've gone through a lot of different phases of smoking/vaping though but thats cuz I've been chiefing since I was 14 and up until this year, I've ALWAYS had weed cuz of my sister (who is the biggest pothead I know- she moved out though and lives 15 mins away, so if I wanna smoke for free I just gotta drive up there )

Once every 3 days is best in my opinion... but...it normally doesn't work out that way

Once I get high.. I just wanna get REALLY high...and keep it that way...and then I smoke again chasing a high that won't come...and again....and again..

im such a junkie for weed, lol.
