Gyromitra gigas (snowbank false morel)
    #13983121 - 02/18/11 03:46 AM (12 years, 11 months ago)

Hey people. i'm brushing up on my morel knowledge in anticipation for the PNW morel and spring truffle season and I'm wondering if anyone has experience with Gyromitra gigas (snowbank false morels.)

My field guide (mushrooms demystified) lists it as choice edible but not to be eaten raw.

I always hear people say that all false morels should be avoided, but apparently some people prefer Gyromitra gigas over even true morels.

I'm sure to come across some of these in my hunt, I just basically want to know if they're worth picking, and if anyone personally eats them.

Also if anyone knows any tips or sure fire ways to distinguish them from toxic Gyromitras

They are good to eat and do not resemble other more toxic Gyromitras.

I would not suggest avoiding them.

They're more mottled and have thicker stems? Is that pretty much what distinguishes them?

None of the other Gyromitras out there look much like them.  I think there are only three, the others being infula and esculenta.  They are quite different.
