What do you think of Freud and his theories?

He was obviously very brilliant and onto a lot of amazing stuff.
His drug use is pretty interesting too.
Some of his stuff on sex and family is pretty out there though...
Being Jewish and OCD, a lot of his theories on the subconscious concerning guilt and repressed memories can make me over analyze myself and feel obsessively guilty.
I think I might dig Jungian psychology more, but Freud obviously is genius too.

"Freud had an interesting theory: the Oedipal theory, you know that? All men, he said, wanna sleep with their moms. I thought that was bullshit till one day I saw a picture of Freud's mom. Owwwwwww! Hot tub! Yeah! In a minute. Whoo! I woulda done her over the dryer. Oww! Mama! But he obviously wasn't thinking of my mom when he came up with that theory." - Bill Hicks

 That's great.
Being OCD, some of Freud's theories have really swung my mind into a spiral.

first of all i'm studying psychology in berlin so i'm probably heavily spoiled. i don't think, from a view of a 100years after freud, that you can call it psychology - it casts a poor light on today's psychology. it's like calling a horse-drawed carriage "car". today's psychology is a science, while his theories were merely a weird construct of ideas that can't be proven (right or wrong). don't get me wrong, he WAS brilliant for his time and he obviously pushed things into psyche-related therapy, but today he's just outdated, man

I think "debunked" is a bit too strong a term. He's been eclipsed by better theories, but such theories have tended to build on his work. He was a game-changer in ways that we tend to take for granted. Before Freud, the idea of unconscious motives, suppressed feelings, projection, etc., simply didn't exist in the popular discourse before him. We live in a post-Freudian world where it's easy to mock his more outlandish ideas while taking for granted the paradigm that he ushered in.
