COOKEVILLE -- Five fire engines were racing to the scene of a structure fire yesterday when police arrived and determined there was no fire, just a man who was hallucinating, allegedly after sniffing a bath salts drug.
It happened about 6 p.m. Tuesday on Boatman Street, and Jimmy Lee Arnold, 24, of Lewisburg, ended up being arrested for public intoxication, police said.
Cookeville Police Officer Jeremy Lintz was sent to the reported structure fire and said when he arrived, he saw a man "running around the front yard."
"The male subject, Arnold, appeared disoriented and nervous," the officer's report says.
"He stated that there were noises and smoke coming from the residence next to his. I could not smell any smoke and did not see any flames coming from the residence."
As a full crew of 17 city firefighters were speeding to the scene, Lintz continued questioning the man who had reported the fire, asking him if he could still see the smoke, and Arnold told him that he could.
"I noticed his pupils were dilated and he was sweating profusely," the report says. "I asked him if he had taken any drugs and he stated no. I further questioned him and he stated he had snorted 'bath salts' earlier in the day."
An ambulance crew came to the scene and examined Arnold and found "that he was in good condition," the officer's report says.
"He had caused a disturbance by calling the fire department and reporting a false fire due to his hallucinations. He was arrested for public intoxication and taken to the Putnam County jail."
Cookeville Fire Chief John Kendrick, who was among the firefighting crew that responded to the scene, said today, "What he did is a serious offense. False calls like that tie up our resources and endanger others that might actually have a real fire while we were on a call like that."
He said two fire engines had made it to the scene and others were on the way when it was determined that there was no fire.
Arnold's bond was set at $500, and he was released from jail a few hours after being booked. He has a March 18 court date.
