UK flowhood help request
    #13978940 - 02/17/11 01:37 PM (12 years, 11 months ago)

So I've been thinking a flowhood would be a useful addition to my already cluttered home. Being UK based, the flowhood help thread while being interesting, isn't so helpful for sourcing parts.

So, first question: does this fan look like much use?

The spec is:
"IPX4 Mixed flow fans develop greater pressure than conventional axial fans making them ideal for use in ducted systems or restricted spaces ie. ceiling voids. 2 Speed fan setting
Low speed 180m/h, 20dB @ 3m
High Speed 245m/h, 24dB @ 3m
H X W x D 180 x 168 x 298mm"

The flow rates work out to be 105 and 144cfm for slow and fast settings respectively.

Secondly, where best to get the filter? A brief search on ebay brings up this horrifically expensive specimen:
Ebay example

Anyone got some more pointers?

Thanks.

Thanks for the heads up, dude!

Now all I need to do is convert all the m3/s to cfm and Pascals to mmHg or whatever.

Then I'll do a search for A/C companies a bit more local to me. In the morning.

Do you have an indication of the price range for e.g. 2ft x 1ft filter? So I don't have to contact airclean just yet...

Its much more fun using m3/s and Pa, save your self the hassle.

Quote:

£992+ VAT , filter and fan box, filter is 1185 x 985 mm

so probably less than £200

What are you talking about??:crankey: I love pointless maths on the back of an envelope!!
Actually, it would be more the other way round, to get a grasp on the units used on the US-centric flowhood advice.

How do you work out the £992 -> £200 ratio? Let's see, scaling down to a smaller filter..., making my own box for it..., picking up a cheap fan (groupie?) somehow.

Hmmm... could save up that £200 in a month or sooner if I'm smart.

Do you have a 4ft x 3ft flowhood or something?

Thanks!

That was a conservative estimate its probably closer to 150. Oh that flowhood advice... minor. You wanna face vel. of 0.5 m/s out of an X m2 HEPA at about 200-250 Pa pressure drop, done.

I dont have a flowhood but i emailed them about prices for a smaller unit 609x609mm and they mentioned this size as a standard product ready to do. All the others are made to request. With these cassette type filters you dont have to build a box just hook up the fan with clips ducting etc and youre away. It aint about saving up but where to put the bloody thing. Thats the worse part, i could sacrifice the dinner table but then id have to eat off the floor like a little doggy.

Thank you. It's all seeming very doable now. I could probably jam it in my shed for storage.

Ha! Eating off the floor - try living with a toddler... Also, it reminds me of the time I had a distillation setup standing in my kitchen for a while. Not much room to do anything although we always got the dishes done straight away, otherwise we'd have been falling over them.

What did they quote you for that smaller unit?

100% doable HEPAS on my doorstep :naughty:

I reread the emails they sent to get a face vel of 0.5 m/s, the pressure drop is 175 Pa. Tell you what Ill send them another email get a few prices cos they tried to up sell me the biggun and did not give a price for the 609 mm. Ill post the prices asap.

The jasun filtration site the have detailed prices but the actual filters are paper and hot melt glue, not paper and aluminium. This company say that the glue ones are a direct replacement for the aluminium ones but i dont actually know.
