i have a chug. half chauhahua half pug. one word from me and he does as he pleases. we let him loose on the beach near here. it took 3 hours to get him back. he was in the surf shop, the pasty shop and the post office. my 9 year old daughter eventually caught him in the kitchen of a nearby restaurant.
he has been voted 'dog most likely to run away'

i would like to help you dude, but judging by my dogs results, im prolly not the best person to help. :goodluck:

Watch a few of the episodes and see if it doesn't help. Dogs are actually pretty easy, and a golden retriever is a pretty good dog to try and train.

A woman goes to her boyfriend's parents' house for dinner. This is to be her first time meeting the family and she is very nervous. They all sit down and begin eating a fine meal. The woman is beginning to feel a little discomfort, thanks to her nervousness and the broccoli casserole. The gas pains are almost making her eyes water. Left with no other choice, she decides to relieve herself a bit and lets out a dainty little fart. It wasn't loud, but everyone at the table heard the poot. Before she even had a chance to be embarrassed, her boyfriend's father looked over at the dog that had been snoozing at the women's feet, and said in a rather stern voice, "Ginger!"

The woman thought, "this is great!" and a big smile came across her face. A couple minutes later, she was beginning to feel the pain again. This time, she didn't even hesitate. She let a much louder and longer fart rip. The father again looked at the dog and yelled, "Dammit Ginger!"

Once again the woman smiled and thought, "Yes!" A few minutes later the woman had to let another one rip. This time she didn't even think about it. She let rip with a fart that rivalled a train whistle blowing. Again, the father looked at the dog with disgust and yelled, "Dammit, Ginger, get away from her before she shits on you!"

imo, it is essential for a dog to know sit, come, stay, and heel; lay down is also a good one. these are the building blocks to a well-trained dog.

i suggest youtubing it.

Basic obedience  training, if well done, prevents most other common problems or makes them easy to correct.

I avoid treat type training now and use a choker. It seems mean but are you really going to carry treat everywhere forever? I had a hard time with my littl 15 pound shithead and had to resort to it but now I think light corrections are the way to go. I need to take her back for group training again at this place and she will be back in top form within a week.

I have two Dogs, a Collie mix and a German Shepard.

Both are very well behaved.

There are basics that you must understand.

First is that you are master of the house and own everything. You must believe and project this.

The dog should not be allowed sit anywhere its at an elevated level without asking for permission so the dog should never be allowed on the couches or beds etc without you giving it permission. If its allowed there without your permission it owns the object and the area surrounding it..

The dog should never go through a door first. It follows through a door because you own the room and the house.

Never ask to be given things, they belong to you so take them.

Never request the dog do something. You're the boss, you tell them what you want them to do.

Walk them regularly and spend time lead training. never let them pull the lead. If they pull on the lead they are taking you for a walk, not the other way around.

Dogs are happy when they understand that you are the boss. If you are confident with your dog then you can relax and have a great time. You can play with them off the lead and allow them a lot of freedom that you otherwise cannot do because the dog doesn't know its boundaries.

One of my favorite games is telling my collie to 'get me the toy' and he searches out a toy and brings it to me. He loves this game.

Myth of dominance training...

Key thing to remember, as mentioned in an earlier post, is consistency.  What comes before that is choosing your vocabulary.  Teach the dog your language.  Keep it simple, be consistent, understand that most dogs (especially a retriever) is happy to follow along.

your advice is right on the money,  i have a one and half year old male sharpei, i had a 2 year old french bulldog male, the pei and bulldog got into 2 fights that i couldn't break up one late and night, i could see that good in the dark, and the next morning they were all over the yard, i thought the pei at 60 pound to the bulldogs 40 pounds tony didn't have change, i thought that mr moto was going to rip of tonys ear, it wasn't pretty.  the bulldog is tought as nails, but  now i have the sharpei, my resident alien.  he does challeng me, and i know that your advice is right on, especially with a very primitive strong willed spirit like mr moto  i tell him that i will take him outback and put a bullet in his sweet spot, i am the boss.  we are still working it out, but i have realized that he need my direction and interaction, nothing like spending quality time with your compapion.  if you have a strong willed dog, its especially correct buty the dog needs to know who's boss.  mr moto was caught leaving the yard, but it was my fault for not spending enought time with him, i take him out more interact more, however they must know that you are the boss.  i am still working on controlling him walking, he is such a hunter, especially we are up till dawn.  thats when the critters are out, mr possum, mr armadillo, owls, cats, rats, bats, it sure is nice taking out a night, he enjoys the time, so do i, i have taking control, its tough when get on the scent, he has killed 2 possums, that was what the fights were about, mr moto didn't want to share his kill.  anyway sorry to ramble, but i agree you have to be the boss, you 4 legged alien companion will respect and love you more  time to go for a walk

i am amazed how well mr. moto is doing, he loves to hunt lizards in the back yard, since i have been spending quality time and working with him, he will not go to the back yard without my permission, and if i come in the house he will follow, and ask to go outside again, i have tried to keep the command simple and consistent  he still does challenge me on occasion especially if i have a good buzz  he is more than will to take control, i am still working on him pulling me on walks, but once he get on a fresh scent trail he get very excited, but he is getting a lot better

Over the last few weeks, working with Mr Moto he has responded well to me taking more control.  It really helps to spend time and energy with your companion.  Mr Moto really enjoys the walks, especially if gets on the scent of a critter.  He is hoping for his 3rd kill (He has disposed of 2 possums).  I don't want to see him do that, but its good if we see a critter.  That way he can get some clean, safe excitment.

Take control, and let them know it.  Spend time and exercise with them.  Time to go for a walk

I wont tolerate a dog not listening to me, well any dog that i own that is.

When I was training my dog, I would stand about 4 feet in

front of him and tell him to sit and stay with a treat in

my hand as incentive.  Then i'd toss the treat behind me

as i said "Stay."  He is obviously gonna go after it,

don't let em get it, grab it first and even push him away

if you have to.  Repeat this as many times as it takes

for him to listen.

When he does eventually stay, pause for 5

seconds before you say "get it."  Make sure you're using

the same words clearly and decisively each time.  Also

incorporate a hand signal for sit and a hand signal for

stay.  Use those each time as well.  Mine are: Sit- palm

facing the floor. Stay- palm facing out, basically the

halt hand motion.  Dogs learn through consistency and

reward, make sure to limit all things that will distract

him while practicing.  The dog will get the idea and when

he does, keep making him wait a little longer

My dog now listens so well i could throw a steak

(somewhere where he could easily get to it before me),

and make him stay for 2 minutes before letting him go get

it.  If you can make a dog listen to you instead of

tearing ass after a juicy delicious steak, it will listen

to you always.  Through similar methods i have taught my

dog to not go into the street.  My dog is a lab and loves

fetch, but he will stop on a dime at the curb if the ball

rolls out to the street.  My front yard has no fence so

he has to know the street is off limits.

Sometimes a squirrel or rabbit will run by and his doggy

instincts will kick in briefly, But i yell "JACK STAY!!"

And you know what?  That mother fucker stops cold.

Patience persistence and consistency is all you need.
