Navy Veteran Charged With Growing Pot
February 16, 2011 - fox2now.com

St. Charles County Navy Veteran Ken Unger is facing a felony charge of cultivating Marijuana. Unger admits to growing pot in his home in containers in his basement. He says it's strictly for medicinal use.

"Yes, I was growing marijuana and I was growing it for my own personal consumption. I was happy to be able to have it because it meant I could walk around the block twice and not be in intense pain."

Unger says he smoked pot to ease chronic pain caused by an accident he had in 1983 while on a tour of duty in Grenada. "I was hit in the head with a crane hook from a 50 ton crane from a 1950's vintage ship."

Documents show the Veterans Administration gave Unger a one hundred percent disability rating leaving him unable to work. Unger was also prescribed morphine to control his pain.

"I feel like I’m totally trapped. I’m not allowed anything for pain relief other than the opium morphine and I don't want to be a morphine addict."

Unger says he prefers to use Marijuana for his ailment. St. Charles County Prosecutor Jack Banas made it clear that is against Missouri law, "it's illegal. It’s flat out illegal. There’s no exception to it. We’re not a state that has any kind of defense to that such as a medical defense."

Green Aid the Medical Marijuana Legal Defense and Education Fund posted Unger's story on its website. The organization is helping him fight the felony charge against him.  If it isn't dropped, Unger says he'll move on. "I’m tired of fighting this with the state of Missouri."

St. Charles County Prosecutor Jack Banas encompasses everything that's wrong with humanity.  "But, but..I don't care if it helps you.  It's AGAINST THE LAW!"  Ridiculous.  I guess this guy would have no qualms about owning a slave back in the 1800s simply because "it was legal" back then.  Fuck off, Jack.

Yeah, I don't think that one can have justice without compassion.

In his defense it's not really his problem.  I don't agree with it but the guy is hired to prosecture criminals, under current laws, this guy is a criminal, you're a criminal, I'm a criminal.  It's retarded but that's the system.  I honestly believe that in some 100 years or so the folks who pushed the war on drugs will be looked at the same as those who pushed slavery, anti women's rights and etc.

This is why the justice system is so fucked up though.  When people blindly follow the letter of the law, we not only catch real criminals but we also end up putting people like the guy in this article behind bars when he clearly doesn't deserve to be there.

There are old laws still on the books in some states that require a bar to have a place to tie your horse up and ensure it has water.  If we blindly followed that law today, just like this jackass prosecutor does, it would make for a very interesting news article.  I almost want to rent a horse and ride it to a bar where some of these laws are still active, just to watch people's reactions.

And yes, you're absolutely correct on that last statement.  One or two hundred+ years from now, the prohibitionists will surely be viewed in the same manner as those who supported slavery among other things.
