Grammar Nazis, help!

Does the concept of an ellipsis apply to question marks as well?

So would it be proper to do this???

Looks like it's up for debate, but most consider it very informal at best.

If you're writing a book, then no, but here, it's okay.

Yes in that you put an elipsis before the question mark.

Multiple question marks or exclamation points are a way to emphasize a sentence in particular as a question or exclamation.  This however is not proper formal use of the language, you should use none or just one in a formal situation, like filling out your taxes.

On the Internet it's permissible as long as you don't mangle the sentence but overuse of it will make you look odd.

Yeah, superhigh and wiccan's responses combined FTW.

If I wanted to ask a question but imply uncertainty, I would either trail up to the question mark or away from it.

Generally the accepted way would be trailing to the ? like so:

"Are you sure you want to do that..?"

But I also like to use trailing away from it like so:

"Are you sure you want to do that?.."

I find that they imply slightly different senses of uncertainty... it's like, is the doubt coming BEFORE or AFTER the affirmation of it being a question? Circumstantially, I choose what fits best.

Trailing up to the question mark makes me feel like you're not certain it should be a question... like you feel the statement is ALMOST an imperative but at the last second there is uncertainty or doubt... a sort of need for confirmation of the imperative.

Trailing away from it implies hesitation of asking the question.. like you know it's a question for sure, and are sure it needs to be asked, but are uncertain as to whether or not it is "safe" to ask. (Perhaps asking a question that you feel could be offensive.)

Obviously none of that is "technically" the grammatically correct answer, but I do find that it's highly effective in applied situations.
