First Post! what's going on with my cakes???
    #13976206 - 02/16/11 09:45 PM (12 years, 11 months ago)

Hello everyone,

Great forum here. Lots of good info and I hope to learn much more than I know so far. So this is my fifth attempt. The last four all failed due to mold, but the place I was staying out became highly infected with mold. It was bad, the walls started turning black!!!! Anyways at this new place, it seems to go great so far. Everything went fine (full colonization took longer than I would have thought, about 6 weeks)until about two weeks ago when I switched everything into the FC. I made a shotgun and put a light on a timer 12/12. Well I see growth, but one of the cakes has a weird look to it. Looks like a corral or barnacle type structure growing on the outside. I did a search, but I can't find anything really like this one as far as the texture. It won't grow mushrooms and this stuff is growing at the same rate that mushrooms are growing on the other cakes. It also is a bit more slimy.

The second one is showing signs of green. I think its mold. I cut it out and put it back in the FC. I can't put it outside and I can't have it anywhere else, those are the rules! I covered it back with Verm, but I have a feeling it's going to come back as mold always does, it has growth on it. Should I pick what's one there now and toss it or just let it go and see how bad it gets.

What about the other cake? Should I toss it. Is my light to far away? About 2 1/2' from the FC. Anything else you see wrong, my FC is on the floor and that is being changed very soon. My temp is usually around 65-70 and humidity is 97% to 99%.

Any info would help, thanks everyone.

Yeah that first pic gets me too. Could be a bad type of mold.

Looks like at least one cake for sure (the one with the green spot on top) is contaminated.

Good chance that the rest are contaminated as well.

The one with the big shroom looks as if it started growing well then instantly aborted. This can be caused by really erratic fruiting conditions or the infection of the green mold.

I would toss it all out and start over, but thats just me. If you don't, at least throw out the perlite when you're done because its gonna have the bad mold spores all over it.

Can we get an overall shot of the FC?

That is so cool.  Also, ImaginingEmotions, why do you think the mushroom aborted?

i stated above that it may because of erratic fruiting conditions or the infection. but now i think the infection is the cause.

aborts can be caused by a bunch of different things. from looking at the pics, it seems like the infection has developed in all the cakes, more apparent in some than others. As the mushrooms grow, they suck the moisture out of the cakes which carries the nutrients to it as well. It may have sucked in bacteria from the mold and totally killed the mushroom or even the entire mycelium colony in the cake, which results an abort or aborts.

The size of the mushroom and the amount of moisture in the FC shows me that the fruiting conditions are about where they should be.

The next time around try to be as clean as possible. Make sure you sterilize the cakes for at least 90 mintues, inoculate the jars in a really sterile environment like a glove box, and clean the inside of your FC with a lot of rubbing alcohol, and use brand new perlite, and make sure the FC is off of the floor and away from any sources of mold like garbage cans, dirty laundry, etc.

thanks for the replies everyone. Here is another picture of the FC. Oh ya, I did throw the jars in the PC for 90 mins, used gloves. Hell I even made a vacuum chamber to do the inoculation in. No joke, bought class IV industrial clean room gloves, riveted and sealed to a chamber at work that was extremely sterilized, ran vacuum pump and sucked down through HEPA. Brought it down to 200 micron for inoculation and did not share needles. I am constantly spraying everything with 91% iso alc. Wash my hands before coming near them, keep a door closed to separate them from the main room. Other than the FC on the floor, I thought I was pretty clean.

So i don't know what to really do right now. I removed the two bad ones. I won't be reusing the perlite, but should i just pick all the aborts and the mushrooms that started and should they be safe (guessing of course)? Is growth done or could it continue?

What species are you growing? First cake doesn't look like cube.

Know what would be awesome? If a random spore somehow infected your jar, so instead of mold / yeast, you just grew a completely different species of mushroom.

Second cake is contaminated - throw it away!

If the cake wasn't contaminated in the jar, odds are it's contaminated because you took it out too soon. It's pretty common to have little spots on a jar that just don't want to colonize, but if you pull them out with uncolonized sections, your just asking for green mold. Rye is nice because, if you get tired of waiting, you can easily just break off the piece that won't finish.

The strain is india. I am going to just pick the mushies on the green one and toss the cake. I'll let the other one grow isolated and let everyone know what it decides to mutate into. FC coming off the floor.

Good to know about rye. I was thinking a different substrate might help. I never planned to stay with this tek, but figured learn this and master it first before moving on.

Wow! That first cake looks so weird. Kinda resembles Lion's Mane at first glance. Second pic looks like a trich mold on top. I can't wait to see if someone can figure this one out.  Good luck.

Well there's no holes in your FC, that's the problem.
Take everything out and drill a 1/4" hole every two inches all the way around all six sides.
Re-wet and re-fluff the perlite when you put it back.

:whathesaid: And move the FC as close to the light as you can get it without heating it up.

this is also why your first cake looks like that. I've seen that on my cakes, and increased fae and have it less. That's the worst case I ever seen

This logic never made sense to me. It's like saying you want to master the musket before switching to a Tec-9. Or that you want to program on a Tandy before learning it on Windows. The PF tech is shitty - it was made a long time ago, before anyone really knew anything about growing mushrooms.

Rye is probably best used to spawn bulk - I'd be afraid of rye cakes breaking if you tried to fruit them as cakes.

If you want to make cakes, I recommend whole brown rice, cooked just like you would to eat it (try and leave it a little firm). The little gaps make the cakes colonize quicker and the're easy / cheap as hell.

I wouldn't say the PF tek is shitty at all. I've seen BRF cakes produce awesome results. Yeah its a little out dated, but it's an inexpensive way to get into the hobby. And if you can master PF tek, im sure it will load you with enough knowledge that you could use any other tek with ease.

You probably can't tell from the pic, but there are holes on every side, but the top lid. The perlite is wet, humidity is around 97%. I fan them about 4 times a day. I plan to make the whole thing automatic eventually. I got fans, controller, ducting to make that happen.

Not counting the spores, I didn't really spend any money on this. This was all stuff left over from my hydroponic setup or from work. I am very interested in Rye and will for sure be giving that a shot as I still have many more syringes of this strain.

Another thing is that due to my living circumstances, these syringes were refrigerated for 6 months. I don't know if that's going to effect them (shelf life).

For now I am just going to pick what I can from the cakes and start over. The other weird cake, I am still watching it. Doesn't show any signs of being sick really other than what you see in the pic. I'll be sure to post up more info as time goes on....
