Mushroom Cultivator recipe question
    #13975317 - 02/16/11 07:07 PM (12 years, 11 months ago)

Hey, I lent my book to a friend, and I was going to try Stamet's method of cooking the grain and water together in the pc. instead of soaking the grain first. What's the recipe for a half gallon jar?

I know about the endospore situation, but I've mainly been too afraid the grain on the bottom would be wet, while the grain on top would be dry. Any experience?

thanks. that's the method I've been doing for years. I want to see the results if done without simmering for once.

it worked for you for years, so i wouldn't change up

I myself dont fix something thats not broken..improving a method is worth doing, but by not soaking is not improving, you're taking a step backwards.

http://www.youtube.com/user/HeroinBabies

i think they do that technique in those vids

i personally use RR's methods for rye and use the exact same method when I prepare WBS and have great results

To do it by weight like that, you'll need to shake the jars well when they are still hot out of the PC, for the reason you said.
I don't know the weights or volumes with rye, just wbs. Sorry.

The easiest way to use that obsolete method is to put about a cup of rye berries in your quart jar.  Add a knife tip of gypsum, and then slowly fill the jar until the water just covers the rye by about 1/8".  Put the lid on and PC.

You'll soon see why that method isn't still used.  The starchy grain-dust covered rye will stick together, be hard to shake, and have a much higher rate of contamination compared to more modern teks developed after many years of working with the old methods.
