Hawaii - North Shore - Hiking - Mushrooms
    #13973978 - 02/16/11 02:28 PM (13 years, 17 days ago)

Unfortunately i have to go to Hawaii in a few months. i say Unfortunately becus i hate plane rides and i have been to Wai-Ki-Ki the ride is terrible im going to Nod both rides out. anyway since im going to North Shore Area this time (not tour central waikiki) the only thing im really psyched about is going Hiking and Mushroom Photography since the people we are going to see are Native to the area they are going to pick the spots. im just curious

1. which strains i may see? so i can keep an eye out and maybe study up.

2. can anyone recommend a good Hiking location for Mycology/Photography?

thanx :happyheart:

I'm not familiar with Hawaii's climate.
But if mushroom season is in, I'm sure there will be many different genera to photograph.

When you find some, take pictures of the cap/gills/stem/habitat ect..., then upload the photos either here or on mushroomobserver.org and someone will be able to help you with identification.
Try to take spore prints if you can.

Have fun hunting!

If you're looking for Psilocybin and Psilocin containing mushrooms then you have the potential to see Panaeolus bispora, Panaeulus cambodiginiesis, Panaeolus cyanscens, Panaeolus semiovatus, Panaeolus subbalteatus, Panaeolus tropicalis, and Psilocybe coprophila. Panaeolus cyanscens is the most potent of these fungi.  The majority of these species are grassland loving, and may have an affinity for the dung of large mammals.  If you weren't interested in Psilocybin containing mushrooms then sorry for my input haha.  I would love to see pictures!

Just so you know Hawaii has strict regulations on the importation/exportation of living organisms and/or their seeds (or in this case spores).  While I doubt you would really run into any trouble bringing spores back I would advise against attempting to bring any actual fungi back.  But I'm sure there would be plenty of people who would be interested in getting some Hawaiian Panaeolus cyanscens spores.

yeah i have been thru their customs already. thanx for the heads up tho. i dont plan to disturb the mushrooms in their natural habitat much other than to photo them, and i prolly wont be properly equipped to take Spore Prints. so i wont be bringing anything back. i know the techniques tho so no worries i will make sure i get every part of the Mushrooms Gills/spores etc... since thats what im going to do, i wont be in a rush

I personally consider myself doing the mushrooms a favor by removing them... its likely your disturbance and subsequent transport allows their spores to cover a much wider area :awesome:
