The Potted Bare Head. 1

Due to the propagation method for these native New Zealand monocotyledonous plants which is by division I seem to have new fruitings of this as yet undescribed Psilocybe species every year.

You may suspect that I have two separate species here but these two specimens show just how variable the species can be.
This species belongs in Dr Guzmán’s section Semilanceatae due to the subellipsoid thick walled basidiospores, lack of pleurocystidia and temperate habitat, it is closely related to P. strictipes and prefers a substrate of fine, well rotted conifer bark and chips.

I first found this species in potted plants in a plant nursery I worked at in 2005, I have seen other peoples collections of it in the wild but it seems to be very common in the nursery habitat, I have seen it in four or five different nurseries in the Auckland area, I suspect the specimen in the first image is sterile.

you had this species in your signature for awhile right?
it's real pretty-like
have you eaten any to determine approximate potency?

I've had gill shots of this as my avatar in the past, I personally have only tasted this species but have not intentionally consumed a large enough quantity to determine the potency, I know someone who has and he said it is relatively potent.

Ahhh, I noticed a bit of duality with the naming, but I never knew that anyone had tried cultivating them

I started a few cultures with spores from the specimen you sent me. I have to say, it's not really a strong performer and doesn't like liquid culture at all. It's doing ok on agar, but it's far from vigorous, really. I'm curious to see how it will perform when I inoculate a few bags of wood shavings with the mycelium in a week. I sure hope it likes lignin better than the agar medium. I still have my doubts whether I'll ever get this species to fruit, but we'll see.
